Only idiots take impatient shortcuts

  • I've just fractured my left elbow by falling over walking. It's only a minor injury (uncomplicated radial head fracture) and I'm right-handed, but it's how I did it that's intensely annoying--after I'd locked my bike up at the Stoke Newington Farmer's Market to get some bread, a van was reversing out and blocking my path. I got impatient and walked around behind some stalls but fell over a pallet that was in my way as I wanted to pass between two stalls. It was totally my own fault--I could easily have avoided falling by walking slightly more carefully.

The upshot is a couple of weeks off the bike and about six weeks projected healing time overall, so no forum rides for me for a bit, e.g. I can't come to Brighton, and it'll be public transport for a while. Commiserations/pisstakes welcome.

Not quite as epic as Clive's saga, but certainly as stupid as it gets in the manner in which it happened. Now fruitbat can get his own back by making me laugh if he's quick enough, as involuntary clenching of the arm means pain. :O

Oh, and everybody will of course be devastated to hear that one-handed typing will mean shorter posts. :)

Take care out there. Stick to riding your bikes. Walking is just so wrong.

  • I always knew walking was evil!

    Heal quick, OS!

  • what Hippy said.

  • Yep. Walking is shit. In fact, my legs are so geared towards cycling that nowadays I canhardly walk a mile or 2 without getting leg pains and moaning

  • Oliver; this only makes sense if you know that any other course of action would have left you uninjured; which you don't. You may have slipped on a banana skin and ended up with a broken neck had you been more patient. It was not impatience that did for you it was not looking where you were walking. Perhaps you need some Walking Training. I believe Walking Training UK offer two hours lessons, starting from the basics of Level One (putting your shoes on) right up to Level Three (Walking and chewing gum at the same time).

get well soon you absent minded man.

  • oh oliver.
at least it wasn't the bike that got you:

    bikes are evil too.

heal up. and do another overnight ride to somewhere soon.

  • shit news.

    sorry to hear that oliver.

    heal up quick my friend.

  • There is always some risk in taking a shortcut otherwise it would just be the way.

    Heal up soon Mr Schick

  • at least you know your elbow from clive's arse.

    heal up olly.

  • Cheers, guys. Much appreciated!

You're right, of course. I did contact WTUK some time ago, but I'm afraid we only got to about a quarter of the way through the initial assessment of my walking ability before the trainer ran away screaming into the distance. I don't know why--maybe he was wearing uncomfortable shoes (someone supply a 'trainer' pun, please)? Strangely enough, every time I call them, they hang up the phone saying they'll call back, but I don't think they have. I'll persevere.

  • Oliver, that is awful. I am so sorry to hear this. I do hope that you are able to heal fully and quickly.

Of course, my real fear is that without cycling, Oliver will have even more energy to put into his posts, which may be shorter but, on the evidence of this thread alone, are no less plentiful.

Make sure you rest and recover properly.

  • btw Oliver, I am impressed that your pedantry has ensured that you placed this thread in the M&M area and not the General forum which is, of course, reserved for proper cycling injuries.

  • pallet0wn3d!!!

  • ...just fractured my left elbow...only a minor injury...

    get well soon.

  • Oh Olly!

    Heal fast.
Add this to the circumstances of Fruitbat's injury and it's clear that walking is clearly dangerous and should be banned. I bet you weren't wearing a walking helmet.

  • Ouch! Really sorry to hear that Oliver.

I fractured my elbow 2 years ago but riding my bike. I collected my brand new bike from Brixton Cycles. On the way home Jaygee stopped at Evans. I followed him and my front wheel hit the side of the pavement (not higher than 1cm....) and BLAM! I put my hand down to protect myself and voila. Jaygee told me that I didn't know how to fall and I still haven't registered on the "how to fall" ability course.

I was in a sling for 3 weeks. I went on a walking trip the 3 weeks and that strengthened my elbow big time and went back on my bike on my return. People pushed me about on the tube :(

  • I'm here only because I read idiots. I'm sorry anyway.

  • I forgot to add that a cyclist colleague of mine broke his hand in a walking accident. And Mark (at Souths, can't remember his forum name) hurt his back when he fell trying to run after a bus.

  • Heal up quick....

  • You stacked a pallet.

    Heal soon buddy ol' pal.

  • Heal up Mr Schick.

  • Sounds like a painful fall. Sorry to hear you're off the bike, mate.

    Heal soon.

  • oh oliver.

Hehe, another classic. Such dynamic drawing!

  • Just killed some for you Mr S

    Not really.
