T Cut

  • Eh up...

I've recently acquired an early 80's Gazelle frame, lucky me, but...

There are a couple of patches of rust that I want to address. In the past I have just used Hammerite to sort it, but to be honest this is the first time I've had anything that could be considered above a beater. I'm going to want to treat it right. Nice and tender.

I've heard folk talking about T Cutting a paint job, as far as I can tell this is just some kind of buffing lacquer (?) that brings up the colours, gets rid of scratches and puts a clear sealed layer down over the paint job.

I really want to retain the original paint work, it's pretty intricate and larvley.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me...?
Is is sommat the paint shop at my LBS could handle...?
Does anyone have any other ingenious sollutions...?

    Cheers

  • T cut, cuts back the paint to a nice new buffed layer. Much like polishing metal with a fine paste.

  • So it's not protective...? Just restorative...?

  • I think so. Dogsballs is the man to talk to as he was / is into restoring cars.

T-Cut wax would add a bit of protection but standard T-cut doesn't claim to.

  • Go easy with T Cut, you can go too far and take the paint back too far quite quickly.

  • ^ yep. Use a damp cloth when you're applying it. Or if you have a spray-mister bottle fill it with water and a drop of washing up liquid and use that. If you go to a proper motor factor rather than Halfords they might be able to sort you out with some G3 products which are much better than T Cut.

As it's an abrasive paste it'll leave the paint completely bare. So if you wanna protect it, apply some car wax. Spray on stuff is easiest to apply, but solid stuff gives better protection and needs reapplying less frequently. I use plain old Turtle Wax in a tin.

Source: Owned five classic cars. None of them were actually worthy of waxing, but yno...
