Looks like a nice route.
Tuesday March 16th ***The Widowmaker ***19:09 at Waterloo http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3508515
A 29 miler. 3 major climbs including the 18% whitedown. It's fairly familiar territory out in Surrey but actually flatter and less demanding than the 5 hills route from last year. You will need to get your gearing sorted out though.
Further information regarding trains, lights, protocol will appear soon. As a rule of thumb remember that the TNRC goes out of it's way to make sure everyone can enjoy the ride but if you are unfit, shit at climbing, can't read a map, have no spare batteries or inner tubes, don't carry a banana and refuse to use a mobile phone then be prepared to ride home alone at 1.am and don't be giving anyone grief on here the next day ;)

Nice route Tim. Start as you mean to go on with a baptism of hills!

The 18% Whitedown is officially possible on 70" fixed, in freezing temps, even for a fat sprinter who hasn't been up a decent hill since October.

we should confess that a small crack team of the TNRC inner circle went out and did this route two nights ago. all were geared except the 'fat sprinter who hasn't been up a hill since October'. needless to say he left us for dead on Whitedown.
it is a brilliant route. climbs leith hill from the proper side, but only after a long rest with downhills and flat lanes dominating after the ascent of pitch hill.
let's just hope we have the weather on our side for the first (official) TNRC of the year. we don't really need to be awarding the SKHAs so early on.

When you say Fat Sprinter. How fat are we talking 80+ kgs?

Is BMMF 80 kgs now? He carries that well. :-)

It's all on my arse.

TBH, I expected to walk Whitedown, especially after the discomfort of Leith Hill - though some of that was psychological due to my last memory of the climb (Leith) being 5 x 5min 'cruise' ascents in 45x18. I'm not that rider anymore :(

:-)
Btw, I'd fucking love to join you. But it ain't gonna happen for a while so I'll take pleasure in hearing about TNRC exploits online instead.

Wahey - white downs is a total cock for that half of surrey. If anyone aside from BMMF makes it up on 70', I'm well impressed...
Last time I went over it, it was so steep I walked DOWN!
Saying that, I'm in (geared) subject to work.
:)
