It was bought up at the last transport consultation, unfortunately they decided to go on with the campaign aimed at teenagers which isn't very successful. You'd think in recession the government would jump at the chance of some cheap adverts on telly and radio, but so far they're only using it to make sure lorry drivers know how to load and unload a vehicle, and that you get your tax return in ontime etc. etc.
It needs to be more broad, aiming it squarely at a niche of teenagers—who aren't usually receptive to being told what to do—is a colossal waste. I expect children are told of the dangers from parents and at school, personally I find the biggest 'offenders' tend to be adults on phones.
At the same time, we have to consider what messages campaigns like this send out. It has been accused of empowering drivers' beliefs they have right of way on the roads, it is their territory and we are trespassers, etc. I think there is some merit to this, but until the governments whole attitude to road-use changes, it makes little difference.

They taught the whole green cross code thing while I was at school in the 90's
These days most primary schools seem to go for a lot of group walks, either for transport to the school (like a walking schoolbus) or walking to things like the swimming baths.
So I imagine the kids still get taught a lot about road safety while at school.
While I was at secondary school, (95-2000) we even had a a group for learning how to ride bikes on the road safely.

The root of the problem is - there's no such an offence like jaywalking in the UK.
As citizens we are being trusted too much. People assume, that's fine to quickly run across the street.
Even worse with those little fuckers who are leaders not followers/you can't tell me what to do/I have to stand up for myself types. In other countries if you attempt to cross the road on the red light, you are killed dead and fined on top of that.
ps. As I grew up in a funny country, where there was no meat in the shops and making political jokes could mean the end of your professional carrier or a stretch in jail, there were few perks of free education. I did cycling proficiency course while at the primary school and a driving licence for cars, vans and motorbikes while at the college. Fun times. It's easier to pass the test when the whole class is taking it.

he did but it's not his voice as i believe 'oi aaaam yer faarther' might not have had quite the same effect in a west country accent...'Darth Farmer' is what he was affectionately known as on set

And anyways the Tufty Club is where its all at...................
What's happened to it?? I remember as a kid this being repeated ad nauseum
Yet I all too frequently see parents dragging their kids across the street endangering themselves and their offspring, just to save themselves a minute
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRUBMBi_lp4
Etc...
Is there anything at all these days that educates kids to the dangers they encounter with traffic etc? and for that matter people in general they just seem to be in a mobile phone daze or somesuch
Has that come across a little preachy? it's not meant to be.
