  • Where can I get caustic soda from?

    Anyone?

Seatpost stuck and nothing else has worked.

    Cheers

  • hardware shop

  • Most hardware stores.

This one was £3 at Leylands: http://www.leylandsdm.co.uk/branches.html

  • Be careful as it can strip your skin, it is the preferred method used by drug cartels to dissolve dead bodies ;p

  • yeah, mind your eyes and what you inhale too, the fumes are nasty.

Reminds me I've got to have a bash at moving a stuck post, thought I'd try the Cola method first ...

  • fuck, couldn't think of anything worse....

  • oh christ not that old police story again.

  • have i reposted... shit i searched and everything.

  • Mentalist.

  • Wear gloves and eye protection! Also, be very careful when dissolving it: add sodium hydroxide to water a little at a time, not the other way around: pouring water onto dry NaOH causes a violent reaction.

  • no, it's the same old drug scare story.
i remember being at school and it being "kid tries acid, runs screaming from pub cos he saw spiders" and "kids fried their corneas looking at the sun".

    i reckon it's not true.

  • ok,

I got my seat post stuck in my polo bike... took it to that bike shop on the cut. Poor barstard spent the whole afternoon trying to cut through my seatpost with just a hack saw blade down the tube (from the inside).... rather him than me.

    :D

i say give it a blow.

    not to be sniffed at...

  • rub it on your bel-end.

  • Cheers guys, I'll head to leyland tomorrow. I won't be mixing it with bleach, nor rubbing it into any of my body parts. If that's what you're into Shinscar, I'll let you know if I have any left after I'm done.

  • my local chemist sold me 500gram for £1.90
had to ask for it though cus it wasnt on the shelves.

  • roll one leg up and you'll be caustically hip man

  • Be very careful with Caustic Soda.

    I got some from

    http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/Surface-cleaners/Homecare-Caustic-Soda-500g/invt/1159440?htxt=4JVcspeq2QL4GbpfWCrUadqsYMwAnYq%2FeR%2BrqANIGzUo2%2FPhy3irdTqHBO1TxqwZBh36kcjzU7wI%0Ak9frIWCg0Q%3D%3D

Make sure you wear gloves and cover your eyes. Add the soda to the water.

Caustic Soda is very powerful. I had a BB Cup stuck in a frame, used Caustic Soda and the cup literally disappeared.

Have you tried all the less drastic methods, eg penetrating oil, vice etc

  • Boots sell it too cheap as fook but I was a bit dissappointed with it's potency

  • Just say you have an integrated seat post. Jobs a good 'un!

  • ok, clever cloggs'

and i used crystals which has down bugger all!

after you have soaked the tube upsidedown then straightened, how do you get ALL the water/solution out?

  • hose pipe through the BB ?

  • mmm.

  • Let us know if the caustic soda thing works, I have got a post stuck in my racer.

how you gonna get it inside your frame though to the stuck part? do you have to take your bb out? will the caustic soda fuck up your paint?
