Needed: Info on Chris King Headset (Gripnut)

  • I've used the search, can't find the info I need. I've also searched Google and have had no luck.
I'm certain this info is out there somewhere, but I have been unable to find it...

For the above headset, do you need a 32mm spanner (well, 2 x 32mm spanners) to loosen/tighten?

I just bought 2 32mm spanners which don't fit - I know the headset is made in America so do I need an American Standard, or even an imperial spanner?

As I've been typing this, I realise how stupid it sounds... I measured both the headset, and spanner with a vernier (the really old, none digital type) and they both seem to be 32mm, if anything the headset looks closer to 32mm.

    Please help.

  • Anyone?

  • hi forms, i had troble with my spanners not fitting it too.
i just filed the spanner on the insid a bit
you have to do the bottom one up, then bring the top one down onto it. whilst holding the bottom one tight with another spanner.
it stayed tight as a nut (ha) for well over two years.

try another spanner. it is 32mm

  • maybe they are cheap spanners?

  • more than likely

  • Hey forms. From my experience of working in a bike shop, headset spanners are often innacurate, or the headsets are, either way. I just fitted a 105 headset and the 32mm didn't quite fit it, despite fitting other headsets fine.

Try really gently sliding the spanner on, if that doesn't work then yes, file the spanner a bit, but you need to do quite a good job so that there are no burrs or sharp bits to damage the headset.

  • adjustable plumbers spanner.

  • adjustable plumbers spanner.

Wouldn't that only work on the top nut though?

  • yup

  • Cheers guys. I know how to tighten/adjust the headset. And i thought that the spanner was a little small (at least the mouth of the spanner's seems to be .2 of a mm too small). I emailed the seller, and he told me king's weren't 32 mm, so i thought maybe my measurements were incorrect. I need some sort of evidence that i can send him to show him kings are 32 mm so he'll give me my cash back! Also, i didn't think filing would work on hardened steel? I thought using a grinding/sharpening stone would be better, though i dont have one the right size.

  • file one side of the nut then :)

  • file one side of the nut then :)

    you dirty old bastard

  • Quick question, is there a thread on here where you can borrow tools from people? I had it in my mind there was, but now I'm thinking I might've been imagining things...

    I'm after a nipple driver.
