New Rear wheel advice

  • For my track bike, I want a second set of wheels, clincher, for when I don't fancy tubbing it. Have a front wheel, system EX and Open Sport, thinking of something light and fast (bike can't carry n'owt anyway) so ... ummm ... a hub and Open Pro? Thoughts?
Rutland cycling on the 'bay are offering wheels for £45 delivered, but 1- fixed free, 2- Mach 1 Omega rim, no idea.

  • If you want a really really light fast wheel. Focus on getting lightweight tyres & inner tube.

I think those mach 1 rims have a bit of V on them, so will not be as light as shallow depth rims.

  • Yep, planning to accessorise with some proper light tyres, as they won't be tubs I can fix those. Other option is to just hope that my tub-fixing-spray works.

  • While I'm on the lookout, can anyone reccomend a bike shop that might have a replacement axle for a track hub - cup and cone type?

  • a decent stock of axles and cones in particular are very hard to come by these days. manufacturers and distributors seem to actively encourage disposing rather than mending old stuff. sprockets would be your best bet i reckon.

one of our customers had a bent axle on a year old deore hub - axle £18.99, entire hub £24.99.

  • you could try scotts cycles on the stratford road in hall green....they seem to have everything.

  • Halfords sell basic axle kits for about 10gn

  • Have just built an on one hub onto an open pro with db spokes will check it on the kitchen scales if you want to know the weight

Best bike shop in Birmingham. Speak to Pete or his dad, the other dude can be really 'off'.

  • 958g without rim tape lockrings or cogs

  • New question:

    • My current bike has a 55mm chalinline 135 spaced hub: on-one inbred. These are no longer made, rather on-one do a double-fixed with a 48mm chainline. Can't source a new 55mm hub, so should I change the chainline on my bike - two new rear wheels? If so, should I look at re-spacing the rear dropouts to the more common 120 spacing and be able to use the same wheels for both my bikes (who does this in B'ham?).
