  • Finding myself entranced by all things Japanese at the moment I'm looking for some film suggestions. Any era/genre really. I've seen Sonatine, Glory to the Filmaker, Hana-Bi, Unagi, Zatoichi, Tokyo Gore School, Battle Royale, The Ring.. that I can remember. Any must-sees?

  • throne of blood
    touch of zen
    ran
    rashomon

  • Akira

  • thanks, I check them out

  • throne of blood
    touch of zen
    ran
    rashomon

    • everything else by akira kurosawa

Personally I think Ikiru is one of the best he made

  • Throne of blood, Akira, and Ikiru on their way

  • Kurosawa++. I like 'Yojimbo' the best, but.

Anything by Beat Takeshi is worth at least one look in - if you liked Sonatine, you'll like "Brother".

Takashi Miike provides a mixed bag of awful and great. From Ichi the Killer (Great) to Izu (Wank).

Uzumaki, Dark Water also worth a go.

  • Do you mean strictly Japanese cinema? Or asian?

Wong Kar Wai, check him out.....2046 is one of my favourite films.

  • Casshern.

  • anything by Ozu

  • Yeah really liked Sonatine so I'll have a look at Brother too, it rings a bell so not sure if I have seen it already.

Japanese cinema mainly as I know I enjoy it but as I am totally new to Asian films I'm grateful for any suggestions that are worth a vidi

  • Grave of the Fireflies is an amazing film.

  • Grave of the Fireflies is an amazing film.

    +1.

  • Kurosawa++. I like 'Yojimbo' the best, but.

    Done

  • Is woman of the dunes japanese?? If so do that

  • Wong Kar Wai, check him out.....2046 is one of my favourite films.

Personally I hate 2046 but chungking express is top of the pile (but it's chinese)

PTU is good too (but is chinese)

  • you hated it?

I think i slightly fancied Tony Leung in that film......and the very sexy women*

    *(just reinstating my hetrosexuality)

  • Just watched the madness that is Tokyo Gore Police. Doubt it will win any Oscars but I fucking love it's weirdness!

  • "Visitor Q" has to be the most memorable film I've ever seen.
I thought David Lynch had a warped mind until I saw this!

  • there's a major Ozu season at the BFI / NFT this month.. it doesn't look like they're showing his best-known film Tokyo Story, probably cos they show it quite often anyway, but out of those playing Late Spring, Tokyo Twilight, Floating Weeds and The End of Summer are well worth it. Ozu is mostly about serenity, social observation and the family, beautiful films.

Kurosawa-wise there are epics, period films and contemporary dramas and thrillers. The contemporary stuff never seems to get mentioned when people talk about him on here so I strongly recommend "High and Low", which is a tense cop thriller, and "The Bad Sleep Well", which is sort of a corporate gangster thriller. Along the way you also get film technique that you just don't see it in films of that period and you realise just how much he shaped the language of modern cinema.

"Ran" is one of the most awesome films ever made and you should try and see it on a cinema screen.

I also think "Dolls" by Takeshi and "My Neighbour Totoro" deserve a mention along with the other good modern films suggested on the thread.

they'd been showing tokyo story numerous times over the past month which might be why there's no signs of it as part of the Ozu season.

+1 on Totoro... actually, i really like most if not all of the Studio Ghibli films, especially the cat returns and porco rosso.

  • Lovefilm.com was really useful for satisfying a lot of my interest in Japanese film

plenty of Kurosawa, beat takeshi (one of the coolest actors and directors) ghibli, takeshi miike etc from there you can start tracking actors and directors

also tampopo is awesome if you don't want to eat ramen for weeks after watching it I'd be amazed

plus one to most of the suggestions above too

It's been on since before xmas, they showed tokyo story almost every day for a month

  • Revenge Trilogy.

    Tale of Two Sisters.

It is the only film where you see dude fly round a room powered only by the blood coming out of his leg stumps.
