  • I was thinking of trying to organise for this Summer(on a historically statistically unlikely to rain Saturday) an FGSS D'ohlympics consisting of a couple of semi-serious bike time trials and then a slew of fun team/individual events played on grass with all-day snacking/drinking followed by a picnic or en-masse visit to a restaurant for late, late lunch.

It would happen in Regents Park and one separate location.
The two semi-serious cycling events, an individual time trial up Swains Lane and an individual time trial around Regents inner-ring would happen earlier on in the day(around 9:30-10:00). I would have prizes of NIB lights for the winners of the bike events(poss. 2nd place too)

The main more social and fun events would kick off from 12ish on a good patch of grass in Regents Park proper. These would consist of events like tug-of-war, egg-and-spoon and any other events you guys could think of.
Would be great to get some Polo in there somewhere but I don't think it would really work with the setting/time.

    Is this a good idea?
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
Could anyone offer me some help with the grass events?

  • Sounds awesome

I'd help with grass related stuff

  • Perhaps we could have some kind of prize for winners?

Sounds like all the makings of a spiffing good day out.

  • Did you read MA3K's post? He already suggested that.
"I would have prizes of NIB lights for the winners of the bike events(poss. 2nd place too)"

    Sounds like a groovy idea.

  • Thanks James, hippy.
Logistically it shouldn't be that hard.
We can pick some events, make a person responsible for each one(or some).
I can do the cycling events with one other person's help.

Could really be a cracking day, bringing together a whole bunch of people in not-necessarily cycling-related fun.

Just see if there is any interest first..

  • Jousting competition?

  • Hah!

Tug of war on bikes sounds mental though, new sport?

  • ultimate frisbee on the grass? the whole idea sounds pretty awesome

  • Jousting competition?

If anyone would like to organise it, that would be great.
You'd need two smaller-frame bikes with long seatpoles and bunch of bloody-great jousty-sticks.

I would be delighted and amazed if someone pulled that together, but for the moment I am just going to concentrate on events that are fun for mass-participation and easy to run and equip.

  • Bike rugby? Full contact though, none of this touch rugby nonsense.

  • ultimate frisbee on the grass? the whole idea sounds pretty awesome

fuck me, ultimate frisbee on bikes. that could be well mental

  • Obvs a track stand comp is called for.
Perhaps a slow ride comp or an obstable course.

You could avoid too much injury by having pillow jousting.

    Bunny hop

    Backwards distance event

  • I'd help with grass related stuff

    I'm sure you would.

    Great idea though John.

  • Hah!

    Nope

  • Yes!

  • Maybe it's time to resurrect this?

You bring it, we can do it scott.

    skinning up duties?

  • Archie's Grobags accepts NO RESPONSIBILITY for any injuries incurred through the use of his bungees!

Rubs hands and cackles to himself

I'll draft a disclaimer, looks like it could be 4-pages long..

  • skinning up duties?

you skin 'em up, i'll smoke 'em. deal?

  • bicycle pole vaulting

  • Now you're just being stupid.

  • Now you're just being stupid.

indeed - your plan sounds a good one tho.

  • Pisumo jousting! Bigger circle...giant foam cotton buds!

    Ah, sumo style then.

We could have a 30 rider Royal Trundle.

  • Capital idea Jon

I would recommend teams for the following reasons

    • Fewer people particitipating in each event but each team represents in an event
    • Teams will ensure people turn up (you can't let your team down!)
    • Team scores will give a better overall final score
    • Each team can take a country and dress/theme up accordingly
    • Team sports like relays, polo and tug of war make sense
    • Events can take place at the same time

    Sports wise

    Grass bike Polo
    Swains lane hill climb TT
    Regents park inner circuit TT
    Bike Bungee
    Tug-of-war
Egg and Spoon.. (maybe polo ball and crank arm)
    Sprint (run)

    all rock!
oooh don't forget the boating lake!

  • oooh don't forget the boating lake!

    Bike Water Polo?
