  • This deserve it's own topic, I couldn't stop laughing at how each bike slip on the ice, I know I shouldn't be laughing at this especially given how dangerous it is, but it's hard not to;

    YouTube- Glad In Lelystad

  • I agree - v amused but feeling guilty at the same time. Having survived 3 small patches of ice this winter (geared bike travelling in a straight line) I was told yesterday that fixies are better on ice. Is that true and why?

  • boy those noises sure are funny hahaha!

If you end up on some ice you ARE going down.

The fixed wheel thing helps you out in slightly less than optimal traction conditions yes. But proper ICE is so damn slippy.

It gives you a better "feel" for how much grip there is, which may equate to 1 second of extra time before you slam into ground.

  • I saw some of them leaning

  • The only real advantage a fixed gear has in slippery conditions is that you can regulate your speed with your legs in a much more controlled manner than with brakes. Ice is still not a good surface to ride on mind you.

  • wait. ice. lean. no.
    simples

  • Heavy frost this morning people towards kingston way...anywhere else?

  • snow in Kew

the reason why fixed can be better in snow/ice is you are used to having a rear wheel skidding, so if it happens on the ice you are in a better position to manage it

you also have much more direct feedback through the drivechain as there is no derailleur to delay the response

    Rubbish.

Are you trying to tell the people on here that during the recent cold snap that the solid shiny wet stuff we rode over wasn't ice? Piffle. It was ice, and most people didn't go down.

    Just don't lean.

So many of the people on that video leant, and were going too fast around the curve to avoid leaning.

  • snow over the bridge david?

  • So is leaning bad?

  • Hang on, just so I have got this right, keep vertical and no leaning, right?

Jokes aside: I went out everyday in the recent snow and whilst it took me a lot longer to get anywhere I did get there, and without falling off.

  • i cant believe it took til the fourth reply for leaning to be mentioned.

No, it's tropical up here. It's just South of the river where it sucks ;)

  • Instead of filming them, he could have had ample opportunity to be chivalrous and helpful.

Maybe even put a sign up before the corner saying "Leun niet!"

  • ...or some salt on the path

  • ...or some salt on the path

    You'd have thought so.

I couldn't help but laugh at some of these (more so the ones when people somehow stayed up right) but I remember how painful it is to fall off.

  • Funny. Fascists!

+1. keep straight and all will be fine.

  • im blatently going down like a sack of shit on the way home for laughing at this

  • ...or some salt in the wound

    wot?

  • Says a lot about the Dutch and bikes. Not the sort of bikes we'd ride, but lots of people not in cycling gear - so cool - and lots of very nice ladies. Every time I go to Holland I just about weep at their positive attitude to cycling.

  • The guy at 1:36 won, he made the ice his bitch.

Oh definitely, exactly how cycling should be, a comfortable mode of transport, not a bloody time trial.
