  • I know this thread title wont win me a popularity prize but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the Gazzetta - had a peek on the search but only found brief mentions - and was wondering if anyone has actually ridden one. Also would be interested to hear any other F+F selections in the £450-700 price range (quite a range i know and realistically i'm not to keen on the mash as i'd rather put drops on rather than having a lo pro)

    Cheers.

    awaits the shitstorm

    edit, inb4 £1, UTFS etc

  • might be worth deciding your criteria first as those framesets are pretty different.

I would go for carbon or Ti if I was spending £700

For £750 I'd buy the Burls TI

  • or get a custom fitted steel frame?

I'm after something i can keep for weekend/longer rides. something fast and strong that i can really try and cane the miles on but something in the back of my mind doesn't like the sound of carbon (no real reason bar paranoia)

Basically i'm a twat and have no idea about frames but have a reasonable amount of money to spend.

to be honest, £700 was the very much upper limit of my budget and as I'm building it up from scratch it'd take a lot longer to put together a groupset that would do it justice.

  • Orlowski Track. Handmade steel. £400.

  • Id go for the mash cinelli cause the colours are awesome and you get instant street cred and you have a challenge of building up a nice one.

  • you get instant street cred

    debatable.

    950 and +1

  • or get a custom fitted steel frame?

if your getting custom built, you may as well go the whole hog and go ti IMO

  • I'm a fan of the Vigorelli and the Gazzetta. Can't go wrong with Cinelli really.

lol, although I would like to have a crack at that last bit myself.

Sorry to sound contrary but why is titanium 'the whole hog'?

  • As the op sounds a bit like me, to build a rust proof ding proof frame that can stand a lot of abuse then ti souns like a good idea.

well, a custom built steel frame is expensive £700ish but a custom built ti frame is £950 and up, Burls was the cheapest guy i found and doing custom built frames by a longshot, most others i inquired about were closer to £1500.

dont get me wrong there's nothing wrong with steel, infact i think steel frames have a lot more character, and often have a lot more of the builder in them, but titanium is such a joy to ride. weight wise comfort wise performance wise. plus it will never rust, whe i took out my bb to give it a clean the ohter day there was a pool of rusty water in the bb shell! but the frame was sweet as a nut, a bit of rust on the outside of the BB mind you. it will never break (unless you get a shitty frame and the brazing comes undone) or dent. when i ride over cobbles i only get vibration through my hands from the carbon forks, ti is like riding on a cloud or one of these vv

  • If I had the cash and the same requirements I would buy a road bike.

If you're set on a fixed gear bike I would go for titanium with more relaxed geometry, more road than track.

    Titanium

Pros: Incredibly strong and lightweight. Riding ti is like being carried across a land of down duvets while on opium by herd of Jell-o horses all riding lugged steel bikes with Clement tubulars.

Cons: The vast majority of titanium bikes are built of tubing purchased from breakaway republics that were once part of the former Soviet Union. These republics subsidize themselves by dismantling their nuclear weapons facilities and selling the space-aged materials of which they are comprised to the West. The result is that most titanium bikes emit unacceptable levels of radiation. Owners of titanium bikes are transforming their DNA on every ride and are unwittingly spawning an army of mutants even as you read this. In an already uncertain time, this is, quite frankly, horrifying.

I don't work for Mr Bubblan but his price was nearer to £800 which included a Ti fork

I don't know mate, you can get a pretty good lightweight strong tubing for £700 or under (Reynolds 853 as an example), whether the cheapest custom titanium are usually plain gauge tubing for similar money, it'd cost something like £1300 for a triple butted titanium, that would be 'all the way'.

not that there's anything wrong with plain gauge titanium of course.

I would love to have a titanium frame (especially your), but frankly, there isn't anything wrong with steel and it's not exactly hard to look after steel if you want it to last.

Sorry, not trying to make it sound like you made an unnecessary purchase! quite the opposite really.

  • Anyone know if the Gazetta is drilled for brakes?

Can't find anything but side on pictures!

One would hope not, but probably

Yes, I am hoping that too. I don't like brake holes in the frame/fork and quite like the Gazetta for some reason.
