  • anybody here ever done/living on a raw food diet?

tried it to sort out my digestion after much over indulgence at christmas. i lasted a day before i was ready to eat my own arm off. i was permanently hungry (and therefore in a bad mood). how is it possible? i need carbs in my life and there are only so many oats and sprouting things i can eat.....

there are all these recipes for 'lasagne' etc but that's just depressing - pretending you are eating a meaty, cheesy pasta delight when actually you are eating mushed up raw veg.

now just trying to lay off wheat (fairly easy), red meat (do-able), anything processed (easy) and dairy (fucking hard) instead.

  • rawfood chocolate is fairly amazing

not sure about raw food as a way of life, we have evolved a little and tend to require food to be cooked

  • Man did not evolve to walk upright, tame fire and develop tools such as the George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine in order to then eat raw freakin food.

Your plan of laying off the good stuff (you forgot booze) for a few weeks to allow your liver to regenerate a bit and your system to settle down sounds like a good plan.

  • Ha - beat

  • Detox diets are a load of crock, the body is designed to cleanse itself. Mind you laying off alcohol for a few weeks does help.

  • I can do raw food on sunny summer afternoons. Mrs de Selby calls it salad. But I need beer 'n' chips later. Just get on your bike to purge those mince pies. I've seen off all but about three of them since Christmas.

  • Juice all your fruit and veg, soups should be ok but make sure you don't eat starch, meat and dairy, also lay off the booze for a couple of weeks and you should notice the difference quite quickly. I've broken my jaw a couple of times and had to eat through a straw and it's not easy but if you're serious of giving it a go then it's a good alternative.
As for detox, raw food, macro biotic etc. +1 to saying it's load of BS. But giving your body some rest from over indulgence is never a bad thing.

  • Tartar Polish raw meet dish usually made with beef if you want raw food.

  • I tend to judge something by judging those who advocate it. Raw food-ers tend to be narrow minded and superior. That some food is better for you raw doesn't mean raw food is better for you. Lots of foods, contrary to popular belief are better, i.e. more of the main nutritious constituent is digested, if they are cooked. It just depends.

  • yeah, i got given a juicer after coming out of hospital last year - it's awesome. am juicing every day again now....

  • and have laid off alcohol and caffeine too

you wanna lay off those 'roids. they make your winkie dinkie.

I've never been tempted after seeing about five or six of my friends try it and none of them really getting much from it. I remember some dreadful dinners, too--I've been meaning to try out Saf restaurant in Shoreditch, which does a lot of raw food, so it is clearly possible to make delicious raw food, but I don't think any of my friends cracked that one.

But I suppose the main reason why I never even tried it was because of some raw fooders who came to a London Vegans meeting once and showed off a fanzine that they had made. It featured as a 'Page Three girl' a photo of a naked obese woman, and they were absolutely scathing and viciously offensive about obese people. The meeting was completely horrified and I can't imagine them having won anyone over that evening. People go raw for a lot of commendable reasons, but these people only came over as body fascists. Not that that should put me off so much, but I'm quite happy eating cooked food and I love cooking.

  • Can someone explain the reasoning behind a diet of raw food?

  • To be honest, neu, I think that's a case of Googling it--there's reams and reams of material on-line.

I have looked into it before and deemed it to be pointless with regard to health benefit. I was interested in why people try it.

Ah, that's something different. I thought you were after the reasoning behind it.

  • Is this just raw veg? You don't include sashimi and steak tartare in this diet?

  • it's time to tell hippies to get a grip

    cooked food FTW

  • Should we bunch together and just have a 'funny diet' thread?

I myself am working myself up to a gallon of milk a day. Desperately trying to put on some weight, may mix it with cream too.

  • soups should be ok
I've broken my jaw a couple of times

My girlfriend saw something on tv the other night, 2 people tested by bods in white coats, 1 has a burger and some water and the other had soup, same calories and water amount
result was guy 1 was starving again less than an hour later and soup guy was still feeling full 4+ hours later
im thinking of going soup and cornflakes only for a while to shift some

on another note, i had my jaw broken to get teeth out and its the worst pain ive ever had, and i know pain, did you not learn the first time ? ;-)
