Sorry for being daft, but what's the deal? Click Printable EDM and then post this to our local MP?

Simply contact your MP, by whatever means you favour and ask that they sign EDM 600. I think that it's always worth including a personal reason and a general reason why they should do this, certainly can't hurt unless you communicate like a drunken stalker.

i got a reply from my mp - jim fitzpatrick.
he says he cannot sign it because he is minister. maybe it is some kinda protocol ?
but he reassures he is very active on road safety for cyclists etc. (he tells me he cycles)
he is looking into hot spots at mile end and whitechapel. (i know there have been 'lorry deaths' at these two locations).
and do i know of any other hotspots ?
nice to get a reply.
i encourage you all again - get in touch with your mp. they are there to help.

Yes, but it's still good to draw his attention to it.

Keep writing to him. He could always do more.

'Hotspots' is a fairly simple notion that generally doesn't capture how and where things need to be done. Things usually have to get worse before they get better by someone addressing 'hotspots'. As for locations, it's best to ask the Wheelers.

Hello James, cylists in london are the worst i have ever seen for breaking the highway code...they never stop for red lights ! i have seen a lot of cyclists get hit in almost all cases they were running a red light..i agree with more training...but why make others pay for equipment...when people do not obey the law ? Robert Syms MP
This is Dorset my friend,
Fuck it,
Im going cycling.
btw my reply:-
Thankyou for your reply
we clearly have a long way to go before cycling is taken seriously in this area

I wonder how all the Londoners on here feel about being referred to as "the worst...for breaking the highway code", perhaps they might like to email Mr Syms and let him know? -

look at his background (from website) for reasons that make it even worse coming from him:-
[Robert was born in 1956. He was educated at Colston's School, Bristol and has a Road Haulage Managers (CPC) Certificate. He has two children, Imogen and Nicholas, and separated from Fiona in early 2006. [SIZE=2
[Robert is a former Managing Director of a Building and Plant Hire Group and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (F.C.I.O.B). Robert was elected MP for Poole in 1997.
In December 1999 he was appointed as Frontbench Spokesman for environment, transport and the regions. In September 2001, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party. In March 2003, he was also appointed as an Opposition Whip. From November 2003 to July 2007, he served as a Shadow Minister for Local Government. He is currently a member of the Health Select Committee
Robert has been readopted as Conservative Candidate for Poole for the next General Election
Robert is currently campaigning for a fairer deal for Poole from the Government on funding for local government, National Health Service and the Police.he is very likely going to be elected in Poole at the next election........

Bob Ainsworth wrote to me (got letter at home this eve having reckoned on not hearing owt) after I emailed him. He can't do owt on the EDM as he's also a minster, but says he has written to the Minister at the DoT (Paul Clark) on my behalf. Not sure what his letter to Paul Clark said, so I'll see if I get owt else back as promised.
Hi,
Gwyn Prosser MP has just tabled this EDM for us.
It would really help if everyone could hassle their MP to support it. Hopefully it will get a better response than the petition.

EDM 600
CYCLISTS' SAFETY AND HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES
That this House is concerned about the disproportionate risk of deaths of cyclists that involve heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), in particular that seven out of the 12 cyclists' deaths in London, all but one of them women, this year involved lorries; recognises the value in increasing levels of cycling to improve public health and reduce the impact on the natural and urban environment; notes that HGVs account for 45 per cent. of all London cyclists' deaths, and one in five of cyclists' deaths in the UK, yet represent only five per cent. of road traffic; supports the provision of cycle training to give adults and children the skills to deal with traffic; believes that more action is required to mitigate the threat posed by lorries; further recognises the need to equip all lorries with side-sensors, in-cab supervision systems, class VI safety mirrors and audible warnings; further recognises that all drivers receive a cycle awareness training course as part of the new Certificate of Professional Competence; and recommends the imposition of conditions of access to city centres for HGVs.
Thanks,
Jo
