Getting a finish like the FBM sword...

Posted on
  • I'm aware I have started a number of shit threads tonight so I apologise -

Anyhoo, how would one go about getting a finish like Sword's? - a semi translucent almost-'varnish'. Either by a company or DIY - anyone got any ideas?

  • clearcoat

  • sorry I should have said I meant the 'coloured' version (racist) -can you have an inked clearcoat - or maybe hand ink then clearcoat?

  • Guessing they used some sort of translucent paint, not sure who could do that for you though?

  • Yeah, that's what I'm asking really - does anywhere do that?

I thought about mixing it myself - inks plus some sort of varnish finish, then getting that clearcoted over the top - i know from trying something a few years ago (fake 'rust' finish using brown inks) that the finishs won't 'chip' like paint as it's thinner - more like a stain but i'm not sure how protective the clearcoat would be? hmmmm

Any car body shop should be able to mix up a translucent paint.

  • any decent paint shop will sell cellulose tinited laquer, maybe even in a rattle can if you're lucky.

  • Snap.

  • The Swords are coated in some sort of plastic that is melted on. It comes off in a sheet where the seatpost clamp is.

  • Translucent red powder coat.

  • yes! That's what I wanted to see : "Cellulose Tinted Lacquer"... I'm there!
