Pretty silly / I-should-harden-the-fuck-up topic but thought I ask.
In this case you may need to larden-the-fuck up. (if you are so thin that you do not have a pad of fat under your heel)
More likely is that you are just not conditioned to it. You got a bruised heel from a short walk because it is much more than you are used to. The body is built for efficiency, it doesnt do things it doesnt have to. It adapts when it is forced.
Walk more often and it will toughen up.
What is a bruised heel?
A bruised heel can be caused by either a sudden impact (such as landing heavily) or repetitive pounding. The heel bone (calcaneus) is protected by a pad of fat. Repeated pounding of the heel can cause the fat pad to be pushed up the side of the heel leaving less of a protective layer causing heel pain. This injury is also sometimes known as Policeman's heel. It is common in sports requiring a lot of impact onto the heel and in particular soldiers marching up and down on the parade square.
If you get a non cyclist to do a days cycling, their muscles will be sore the next day.

if the pain is literally unbearable, see a doctor, obviously something is quite wrong.
If it's just a niggling pain, onwards and forwards, probably not walked enough as a kid.
playstation generation comin thru me thinks. -

Nice thick woolen socks and Vans?
I'd say thats the issue. A flexible thick lining of a sock, rubbing against an unsupportive canvas material? You foot will be all over the place. -

it sounds exactly like this ^, I had it for a few years, it went away. More cycling less walking definitely helps.

my brother did too when he was like 14/15. he used a gel thing inside he's shoes, under the heel, for a while and it went away on its own.

playstation generation comin thru me thinks.Dyl, I get the same thing and I figured it's just that I've suddenly been riding/walking more than my larden-florida ass has had to recently. they feel like I landed hard on my heels. it sucks. I also have that horrid thign where my toes turn all red and painful cos of cold/too-tight shoes. So I have to....
htfu, get better socks, get bigger shoes?

yes, it's pretty much HTFU I'm afraid, Deadly Fanny Pack have it spot on about your feet not being used to doing that much walking.
it won't take a long time to get used to luckily, just beware of blister emerging.
Walked into work this morning and back after, about 3-4 miles each way so not far at all. However my heels really hurt afterwards, feels proper silly but enough to bug me a fair bit. Only hurts in the skin though, not deep at all. I've got dry / thick skin there but so does everyone? Tried to file it down before but doesn't help, anyone got any better remedies? Do I need to get proper shoes? (got vans at the mo, but nice thick woolen socks so shouldn't be a proplem?)
Pretty silly / weak / I might be drunk so trigger happy / I-should-harden-the-fuck-up topic but thought I ask.
My girlfriend just this moment read this and told me 'fuck sake don't post this at a fucking cycling forum, it's ridicolous!' so yeah, I'm weak, please slate accordingly
