Where can I buy 27" wheels from?

Posted on
  • Pretty much that, really. Am having trouble tracking down 27" wheels. I am converting my bike to singlespeed and am currently down one rear wheel so I thought I may as well replace the front one at the same time. Turns out these wheels are an elusive commodity. Any suggestions as to where to look?

There seem to be various options on ebay - anyone know whether they'd be any good?

    Thanks.

  • Thanks.

The 27" are out of stock at the old bicycle showroom unfortunately. But I found some at SJS cycles.

I hadn't really considered buying separate rims, spokes etc and actually building the wheel(s) myself. Interesting prospect and am keen to do that in general, sounds quite fun, but, er, I probably don't have most of the tools I'd need. Specifically I don't have a truing stand. How crucial would that be?

  • Brixton Cycles used to have 27s in stock... You'll only need a spoke key and an upside-down bike to true your wheels...

  • I built some 27's recently but it took me a bit of searching to find some good condition used 27's, I managed to pick up a good condition wolber super champion from PlasticPedals here on the forum and managed to get a NOS mavic from ebay, both £10 a piece. Just need a bit of patience but they will come along, trying to get a matching set though is a tough ask.

New 27's are available in the UK but they are crap for the most part. single walled and made for cheapo town bikes, best getting good cond second hand. If you fancy paying the postage Sun still make good spec 27's in the US, have a google m13 or something I think is the model.

Failing all that, there is a chap called Graham, based in Archway who is a bit of a legend, wicked workshop full of old bits, worth an ask. . .

  • Thanks for the replies. I'll contact brixton cycles and see what they say

Are none of these any good then?

I'll send Graham a message - I'm near Archway quite frequently so that would be a good option.

  • good luck with the wheel building, i have built two fine using sheldon browns how to and a spoke key, no truing stand needed.

  • Ebay shop Wheelandsprocket.

  • Are none of these any good then?

they're fine, the strength lie down in the wheelbuild usually, as long it's build perfectly it's be fine for everyday riding.

easy option too, cheap System EX hubs plus those = 27" wheels.

  • Cool, thank you. Will look up those hubs.

I am a girl so am not heavy and dont ride hard (at all) so hopefully this option would be ok....famous last words.....

  • You should check out on-one for their hubs, cheap at £15 each if you're under a budget, and you'll be fine, with a good wheelbuild it can last years before it go out of true.
