  • **** From Sunday 10th January ****

Every 2nd Sunday of the month we shall meet to bring old bikes back to life.

We shall find bikes that have been abandoned in our city and turn them
    into new rideable machines.

Some bikes shall be made shiny and new and given to people that can't
otherwise afford a bike, some shall be sold super cheap to people that can
afford to donate a little money and some shall be made into bike monsters!

    We shall:

    • teach bike maintenance skills
    • teach welding skills
    • recycle bikes that would otherwise go to landfill

If you have an old bike, bike frame or bike parts that are gathering rust
in a shed then please donate them to our project.

If you would like to get involved then please get in touch- we are
currently meeting at a volunteers house so the meeting place shall not yet
be publicly announced, but if you'd like to come you're welcome, just
email info@ibikemcr.org.uk and we'll send you some details.

Bring welders, tools, plans, paints..... a van/ bike trailers to go scavving with

  • we have a few offers of bikes and bits but no way of getting them, if you have a van and would be up for weekly collection runs please get in touch x

  • I have quite a lot of stuff Nes, my 2 ex-velodrome frames to make into a tall bike etc

  • I was gonna say surely we could get rid of some of the frames lying about

  • you gonna bring em on sunday and weld some shit?

my friend peter said he's gonna come sometime soon with his gas welder and teach people how to brase etc.

  • This sunday? could be done, at your house?

  • Got a few lengths of straight guage tubing , some practise lugs and will bring a pile of files and stuff. Building woody's tallbike is ON.

  • aceee

  • 12pm then, pre-polo

  • Sounds good

    1. Woody
  • tomorrows session is postponed for a couple of reasons
a main one being that the snow has prevented us from collecting bikes etc.
another is i thought we could use woody's welder so i didn't pick one up, but it turns out we can't and it's too late to get it now...
so, maybe next week instead, shall let you know asap if i can pick up the bikes in the week somehow...anyone fancy doing a little ride round picking up the donations?

    love nes

  • Pshaah, was looking forward to that. Did you not say your friend had an OxyAcetylene or OxyPropane torch? True that an arc-welder (woodys) will more often than not melt thin bike-tubing into a sopping great mess.

I've got a little air-aspirated mapp torch (plumbers); but it doesn't put out much heat and is awkward to use - though it HAS been proven to be possible to make strong tidy joints with a bit of skill. I'll get some more brass and some firebricks this week (I have the whole week off) and see if I can get some decent fillets out of it as I've only ever used it for silver-soldering. If I can figure it out I'll show you all how to do it, as it's cheap, though not ideal with it's large nozzle and really rather messy.

If we're still stuck in a months time I'm hoping to pick up a cheapy oxy-fuel brazing torch(when shifts at work increase and funds allow). So we can use that.

    I wanna build a tall-bike!

  • We can use mine (Globs) welder! i never said we could,t just posibly not, but Glob says it is all fine, and that he can drop off the welder and the bike frames!

  • i've built tall bikes with a mig before and they have held fine even with my shoddy welding. they just don't look as neat is all but that's ok. my mate who builds frames for a very reputable bike company reckons...

"TIG , brass and silver are used to make bikes.
however, mig is as strong as tig. just not as pretty.
stick welding (ARC) will also work fine, but you will find it really hard, i still do.
and its beyond messy !! URGH... for making random fun things, MIG is great"

yeah my mate from work is gonna come teach us gas but can't do today...

he is however donating a tandem for us to do up (or to make into a tall bike tandem, no we can't really)

well, if yous wanna come round at noon that'd be awesome, if you have a vehicle we can go round picking up all the bikes in that'd be ace also...

    also angle grinder???

    love nes

  • shit i guess without an axle grinder theres not point, no pint rushing into makignone without actyually havin ll the equipment
when can your mate do it? could we not just buy some hacksaws and elbow grease?

  • i have a hacksaw.....

it's up to you either come today or come next week when we should have loads more stuff and I'll get that grinder and welder.

peter said he'll see if he can come with his gas welder next week too...he is a bit shy of teaching people but he has built his own bike and it looks BEAUTIFUL...

i really do need a lift/ a van to go round picking stuff up at some point, can anyone help?

  • next week sounds better then. Don't know about pickign stuff up, but im sure i can get Glob to drop me off with the 2 bikes and the welder

  • ok cool...shall try to coax someone wit a van/car to help......

  • peter just brought an old tandem frame for us to do up...i guess we could give it to a parent so they can cycle their kid to school...or we could weld it to that tandem i was gonna sell and make an amazing tall bike tandem extravaganza............

  • Christ, tallbike tandem of death

  • hmm i can't find a tandem tall bike anywhere on the net...only this:
