i say no alternatives... screwdriver and hammer is a recipe for a fucked hub.

Don't do it, it won't be tight enough and will scratch up your ring. The tool is only about £10 or you can call by and use mine if you are near N4.

Hey Ed,
One other thing you should know, lightly grease the threads on your cog and lockring before fitting. I got this advice from a shop mechanic after I ruined my first double fixed hub on both sides from overtightening the cog ungreased. No problems since.
