  • Good Friday eh?

    Interesting...

The opens are meant to be club organised races with a different club running each one SFAIK. Open to all.

  • Thanks for this. Glad there are some more weekend races, were there any 'opens' last year?

  • Not really, this new idea is to have at least one "big" race each month, barring clashes.
Hopefully each club/organiser will run a different program each time, so you don't get bored and there's something for everyone.

  • Do you know if there will be any pursuit meetings? Or any Pursuits done in the Meets?

  • Good question. I'd love to try some pursuiting.

  • Do you know if there will be any pursuit meetings? Or any Pursuits done in the Meets?

    I don't as yet.
Personally, I would include team pursuits and IPs in a prog if there was time, but it would have to be carefully arranged as takes quite a bit of setting up. It's also thought to be not as popular as bunch races, but I think that's because nobody ever gets a chance to do them at club/open level! same with sprint events. There was a pursuit meet last season, very poor turnout form what I saw but also nobody knew it was on.

  • Was just thinking it would take up a lot of time, and pretty boring for others hanging around.

  • ^^^This is what i was thinking, Team Pursuits possibly an option?
I would have loved to have done the pursuit meeting last year, but i didnt know about it untill the day.
I think your right, alot of people would love to do Team/Individual Pursuit

  • Cheers mate
they also take alot longer i.e. more riders waiting around to ride?

Yes and no, the actual race time is pretty short, but yeah all the waiting and getting riders on and off the track, starters etc all takes a bit more organisation than simply lining everyone on the fence and firing a starting pistol. For a TP it would probably take around 6-8 minutes per race including starting/finishing time which would probably mean 25-30 mins to get three races done (24 riders) when you can get through double the amount of riders in that time by running mass start races. Unfortunately now the devil is an Olympic event this ridiculous thing will be here to stay.

  • Although i do enjoy the Devils - there always seems to be crashes. Maybe because constant changes of pace?

  • Unfortunately now the devil is an Olympic event this ridiculous thing will be here to stay.

Yes t is a bit of a ridiculous race. But it can be fun though, as well as being particularly dangerous

  • There's always crashes in bunch races, at any level, in fact more so with better riders as the proximity is so close there's often nowhere to go if someone touches.

  • Unfortunately now the devil is an Olympic event this ridiculous thing will be here to stay.

the devil is fun and gives the spectator something. the spectator is often forgotten in the scheme of sporting events. for a place like herne hill to flourish it needs people through the gates, excitement and yeah cyclists. all of these things go together.
pursuits on a track the size of herne hill can be an ideal toilet break for many spectators but give them something where every lap the whole course of the race could change or a three rider 250 metre standing start sprint and they will have a chance to shout, cheer and will know that if they blink they might miss something.
Herne hill needs to use what it has to get what it wants.
the devil is dangerous from the middle to very back of the bunch.

i have an old home made super 8 film of a race meeting at herne hill that had tommy simpson and fausto coppi in attendance/riding - the size of the crowd was unbelievable 4 or 5 deep all around the track, i dont think that is acheivable now as attitudes are different but people spectated because they were being entertained. if people want music playing in the background give them a band, give them a 'live music band off' if they ask for a le mans style start give it to them. spectators do sometimes speak in the way of offering primes in long races, they're saying "this is fun but nothing is happening and nothing is likely to happen but if i offer a 5.00 prize for the first person over the line next lap it might spruce things up a little."

    sorry if i missed something.

  • Good Friday eh?

    Interesting...

The opens are meant to be club organised races with a different club running each one SFAIK. Open to all.

AFAIK, anyone with BC licence can enter good friday meeting. You can't do EOL and you can't ride in certain events like invitation sprints or stayers or pursuit, but there are juniors and youths riding in mass start as well.

  • Oh yeah, i know that. I was just surprised to see it listed on BC already.

(there are some H&S issues BC wanted addressed before allowing GF to take place)

  • Bit rubish the south east champs are on when the national masters champs are on, probably takes away nearly half the field

  • From which one though?

  • Bit rubish the south east champs are on when the national masters champs are on, probably takes away nearly half the field

true, but ups my chance of getting medals. it's not really the same if it's not such a high quality field though, i think

how does one get entry into the good friday meet, is it done on recent results? do you have to know the organiser to get in?

  • it helps, but in theory anyone can get in.

  • I had no idea the Devil was Olympic event. WTF.

  • It's just been added as part of the Omnium, that replaces the pursuit, points race and madison events.

  • Shame, the devil is good to watch, scary to take part in, but I much prefer points races as a spectator and rider.

  • [American accent] And now it's time for the Miss n' Out! [/American accent]

  • true, but ups my chance of getting medals. it's not really the same if it's not such a high quality field though, i think

It was hardly a quality field last year...
