Well, you could get a professional fitting down at Cycle Fit: http://www.cyclefit.co.uk/
It's not cheap though, and if you intend your bike to be dirt cheap you could well end up spending more on the fitting than the bike.
I've had one done there before, when I had a custom bike made. I'm getting another custom bike this year so am booked in again. It is worth it, but until you've had a professional fitting the money is undoubtedly one hell of a put-off.

I'm gonna assume your new here, first things first,
Search, is, was, and always will be your friend, below is the list of threads I got from typing sizing into the search box.
Most of them will have useful information in them, have a read and the answer to your question will be revealed.

Best bet if you want to know what size frame you should roughly be lookin for, go into a bike shop, try a couple and see which one fits.
happy bike hunting...

hello all,
i'm planning on getting myself my first 'proper' bike. after much lurking on this forum and checking out far too many websites, i've decided on getting a nice custom frame, kitted out with budget parts that i can upgrade bit by bit as and when i can afford to. i've decided on a steve goff frame, as i like the look and the price. problem is, i don't have the time or money to venture out of london to get fitted, so will just have to send the dimensions to him.
does anyone know somewhere in london with a bike fitting jig, aside from the bike whisperer? i'd rather pay less than the £95 they're charging. or is there somewhere in london that can measure me up and build me a lugged frameset for £400?
also any other advice would be welcome, eg. whether it's worth spending 2 hours of my time and a sizeable chunk of monies getting fitted to the millimetre and instead just asking for a standard frame geometry or getting something otp, etc.
cheers!

Keep saving.

get fitted. know your ideal fit measurements, apply that to to otp frames and tweak with stem length, rise, saddle fore/aft placement etc.
save up for a custom frame if you feel it's necessary. -

A good quality custom frame for less than £400....no chance, a good quality bike fit for less than £95....again....no chance.
Double what you are expecting to pay here and you are close to the actual costs of a Full Cycle fit, and a fully custom frame.
As MrSmyth said it might be worth just spending the money on a good quality fitting first, and seeing what OTP's are close to your actual measurements, then making a judgement call on how worthwhile it is for you to go fully custom at that point, I think it depends largely on your anatomy with regards to how much of a difference it makes. -

Personally I went to www.cyclefit.co.uk for an existing bike fit, and can highly recommend them.

moronically, i already checked cyclefit - says on their website they'd only do a bike fitting service to people who buy a bike from them. but thank you for your invaluable help.

thanks CrazyJames, this is a great help.

Agree, not everyone needs a custom frame. If you are lucky enough to be within the range of the frame sizes/geometries offered by the various companies then you would not benefit from a custom made. The custom made frame could end up with exactly the same geometry as an OTP frame!
A fair bit of variation in frames from different manufacturers so unless you are an Orangutang or Toulouse Lautrec (no offense if you are) then you should be able to get something to fit.

That's incorrect. Give them a call.

Don't worry about Dancing James, he's just upset that you haven't seen one of his million posts on the subject of cycle fitting, he is usually one of the first people to profess his love for Cyclefit when their name pops up.
Seeing the very useful info he put up his what inspired me to go ahead and handover a sizeable chunk of cash to the very nice folk at Cyclefit, and I walked away one very happy customer, and a lot more comfortable and efficient on my bike, considering my major physical issues from past injuries this was no small achievment. -

However if you did use the search function you would have found further info here:

sorry about sniffy reply to earlier post... unfortunately, i don't have an existing bike to get fitted on, as mine was stolen, and what i'd like is to get the dimensions to order a frame, not get one and then tweak my ride position afterward.
That's incorrect. Give them a call.
okay, will do. must've misunderstood what's on their pricing page.

Hedonist, i'm sure they can do the fit on the sizecycle they have there, I doubt that would be a major issue, best bet is to give them a call and speak to them.
Hi,
I have searched the posts here for any previous posts. I want to build up a classic fixed gear from scratch starting with the frame. I have a pretty good idea from experience which bikes I prefer but would like a second opinion. Does anyone know where you can get good fitting advice in London?
Thanks for any help!
