Assos tubular rims

Posted on
  • A mate of mine was chatting with a guy in the pub who turns out to be an ex-hillclimber who had a load of old kit to flog.

Included were some lightweight tubular rims (really narrow) laced to campag record hubs with some smart ovalised spokes.

The rims are stickered assos and look like pretty good kit. only google results i can find mention that the rims had a special smaller nipples than regular rims..

does anyone have any information about assos equipment? i'd only ever seen the clothing.

  • We had some (26"and 28") at Gazelle when Jelle Nijdam was going to ride the LA Olympics with a 1st edition Gazelle lo pro. Got a picture somewhere...

Very nice, light and extremely narrow rims for tubulars.
Semi-aero, but in those days one of the first aero-ish rims
Rim surface (for glueing, groove in the centre) was that small, that we had to glue the tyres with two component adhesive.

  • @Dutch Cheese:

    This picture?

  • ^ Yes. That picture very much looks like a Gazelle lo pro. >_>

  • I have a crankset and bottom bracket made by Assos, very nice kit, the pedals are pretty cool too:

  • I've just got hold of a similar set of wheels/rims to that described by the OP.
Purchased for the campy hubs but lovely rims and a nice surprise, they are very narrow.
This is all i can contribute to the thread though, as i also know sod all about them.
Best i can offer is some photos:
(PS those pedals are fucking lushty gorgeous^ i want want want)
Would love to know more, the seem pretty nice spec..

  • ^ is that a HiLo Flange?
    is it a track hub?
    fuck i need to sleep.

  • ^Road, yeah high low.

  • Brian Rourke used to be about the only UK source of Assos back in the day (i.e. mid 1980s), I seem to recall the rims were 16mm wide and I think there were 16mm tubulars to go with them. I'm guessing they were as expensive as you'd expect from Assos, because I settled for Mavic CX18 rims and Wolber Record 18 Piste tubulars for my best wheels, C-Record hubs and ACI elliptical spokes, natch.

  • Yes, they're 16mm wide wt tubulars.

  • Just got these on a bike, anybody have info on them
how much can I get for them?

  • I'll take em.

  • i'm at Emiles now, and pointed the pedals out to him......never seen or heard of them before.
Got any more info on them Dwayne?

They are an awesome looking pedals, the bearings are super smooth..... good nick too.

  • Assos made high end, high quality, gorgeous bike components in the early 80's

The rims were big with time trialists in the States because they were super narrow, but narrow tires to match were difficult to find.

The perforated Assos logo seats were popular as well.

Other components, including pedals, are pretty rare and hard to come by.

    Quite collectable.

  • how much can I get for them?

As much as somebody who knows you have them is prepared to pay. I doubt that Assos collectors are very common, so your problem is likely to be finding a collector who doesn't already have a good pair of these pedals.

  • The name Daniel Gisiger springs to mind. Don't know why though; probably wasn't an Assos...

  • Good call, bars and dropouts match, and Gisiger being Swiss would likely have had links with Assos even though his clothes say LeJeune

  • Thanks guys.... I'm sure Emile will be grateful for the info!
He picked up such a sweet little build... Cinelli pista bars & stem, and fluted SR track cranks and a Gippiemme (sp?) pantographed aero seatpost to boot!

Right, thanks, that was the visual association my memory served up. Looks like a lugged steel frame though, not carbon. Could be anything.

Tony Doyle's '85/'86 Eddy Merckx branded pursuit frame was built by Chas Roberts, for example. Pretty common then.

  • I stand corrected. On closer inspection of the Assos pics, they appear to have some form of "head tube lug" too, which I associated with steel in Gisiger's pic. Down tube appears roughly similar too.

  • Hi all!

Do you know how much they value? really good condition, but not NOS.

I have been proposed a pair of rims.

    Thanks!
