Just thought I'd post a warning to all those who use "Edd, an easy to use spoke length calculator"

Basically double check with another site if you're entering your own hub measurements!

Got my spokes today and just started to build when eventualy I realised that my spokes were too short.

I checked the lengths using the sheldon brown download spocal and got longer different lengths, that sound like they're more in the right area. TBH I assumed it was user error so I've just checked using Ed and got the same figures that I based my order on. Bit annoyed about wasting £20, but that's life.

I have used Ed before with known hub and rim sizes and it worked well. I like it because its easy to use.

However, if you are entering your own measurements I'd double check with another site / program.

  • I just built a wheel using Edd and it came up with short spokes too... but I am 99.99999% sure that I messed up the measurements.

I was under the impression that Lenni wrote Edd to be a web implementation of Spocalc, so it should give the same answers? Strange.

  • I built two wheels this very morning using spoke lengths taken from it, having entered in my own hub measurements for both (an XT front, not being dished and used as a rear, and some cheap BMX hub). Wheels came out fine. shrug

  • spocal is teh dady. end of.. never failed me, perfect lengths every time.

  • From the title, I thought you meant this very forum's Mr. Edward Scoble.

  • Lol - me too!

  • Use several spoke calculators for a sense check.

Your time would have been better spent contacting Lenni ehren fried chicken on here.

From now on I will always double check with other spoke cals...

I also had a problem with it when entering my own hub measurement on Sun night.

...but RE time better spent... I think that its worth warning others that when entering in your own hub info it might not be right.

Like I said in the OP I think its a great tool and it worked well when I used it for measurement already listed.

I didn't realise ehrenfriedchicken wrote it (although I had a feeling it was someone on here) - I'll PM him now.

  • damn.
i thought this was gonna be a bitch-moan thread about Scoble.

    i love bitch-moan threads.

  • Yeah, massively disappointed. THANKS.

  • May I ask what the measurements you typed in were? What browser are you using? If it was an error in my program I will correct it.

When I use Firefox and Safari and type in the same measurements than the ones from the database I get the same result, however. To reconstruct this, built yourself a wheel and then enter the exact same measurements into the manual entry box and calculate again.

  • Grovelling apologies.

I've been miss-reading "Spoke hole ø" as number of spoke holes!

Massive user error... sorry I checked multiple times before I posted...

Let me know if you'd rather I get the thread deleted or let it stand as a testament to my families interbreeding

  • Hmm, maybe I should write something else there - it's just that there isn't much room. Or maybe build an input validator. One guy emailed me saying that he got wrong results but it turned out he put a spoke hole diameter of over 20mm; kinda similar.

  • Glad to hear it was a mistake. Now say something nasty about the other Ed.

  • Maybe it even helps if I prepopulate the form with common values like spocalc does. I'll do that with the next update.

I've heard worse things said about Ed to be honest.

  • I'm a bit scared of Ed so my insults are purely technical and oriented on the facts.

  • #must not type#

  • damn.

    We can always derail it.
