Good decision.
Cav would not have endeared himself to the public with that little 'that's what happens when I ride at 100%' chit-chat with Sue.

I couldn't say who I wanted to win really, I thought Button would, almost definately. Giggs was way down on my list of people I thought would win, not in that he doesn't deserve it, just didn't see it coming, don't think he did either!

That was essentially a lifetime achievement award for Giggs was it not? Crazy. Cav is used to being robbed (green jersey, chance for a gold medal in Beijing) but still. A mediocre achievement in football is worth more than an exceptional achievement in every other sport? Well done Britain.

ahem... xfactor...?

You guys do know these are always fixed?
Big push for football at the moment, hence giggsy wiggsy winning and fabio botticelli or whatever his name is getting the coach award.
World cup coming in summer, England in it, lots of people going out to watch games in pubs, spending, seen to be good for the economy etc..

Come on Giggs does deserve this, what is he now 36 still doin the biz, never been one for the pepperoni, no scandal boring sod! Coming from an Arsenal fan well done Giggsy you bastard! Cav, Button, Daley et al just kids loads of time. Thought Wiggo deserved a shout, Awesome effort in TDF and Olympics.

Giggs might have deserved something for lifetime achievement (but not when compared to the Spanish golfer chap) but can hardly be said to be a personality of this or any other year. He is also very hairy.

Fucking bollox. Thats all I have to say on the matter

Don't blame me, I voted for Cheryl Cole.........

Cliveo... to someone outside of the sport of cycling you would probably say the same about Cav or Wiggo
-
• #13
It is sports personality of the year, Giggs this year has played about 25 games or approx 50% and scored 5 goals. He is also Welsh and hairy.
It is totally wrong.

Would you be saying that if Ferguson had'nt nicked him off City?! thoroughly deserved I say

Tallman, Clive is outside of the sport of cycling. ;)

Ryan Giggs = Sports personality of the Year 09...
Contradiction in terms, no?edit: Oops, Clive's already been there... Meh...
-
• #19
To be fair, being pivotal at the highest level in the team with arguably the most pressure to succeed for 20 years without even considering taking more money elsewhere is hardly mediocre.
-
• #20
Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great player... But a great player with the personality of a gate post...
-

I loved Cav's comment, especially after watsherface was saying how impressive it was for him to be about 30m ahead at the finish to Champs Elesees: "When you don't have to hold anything back, you can give 100%... and that's what happens when I give 100%".
I think it's more of a nod to Giggs' impressive career, than something he has specifically done this year. To to have played at one of the best clubs in the one of the best leagues in the world for so long is pretty impressive.

Why would they base their opinion on the personality of the athlete. I don't care if Beardsley is a nice chap! It should be called 'Sports Person of the Year'.
-
• #23
Yes it's really Sportsperson of the year, I don't know why they don't just call it that.
Otherwise, how could Princess Anne, Nigel Mansell or Nick Faldo have won it in the past?
Not that I think Giggs should have won it. But for sporting reasons, not for lacking "personality".
-
• #24
Given the role he's played in so many Man Ure sides for so many years it would be wrong if he didn't get Sports person(ality) once and his form over the last year has been some of the best of his career. Doesn't matter about your allegiance, if you know about football you know a great player when you see one.
Giving lifetime achievement awards to people that haven't won the big prize is a bit of a cop out and I don't think they should be given until after retirement.
Giggs is still a twat tho.
