Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by lorry
December 8, 2009 by Rob Powell

A female cyclist was left seriously injured yesterday after being hit by a lorry in Greenwich.
The incident happened at the junction of Vanbrugh Hill and Woolwich Road on Monday.
No further details are yet known but this article will be updated as soon as more information is made available.
In May this year, a female cyclist was killed after colliding with a lorry at the junction of the A102(M) and Woolwich Road.

  • Not a fatality.

  • Horrible bit of road, there always seem to be buses dropping people off and/or lorries parked up un-loading and the traffic is very stop-start due to the amount of traffic lights on the road too.

  • I ride by there every day and have seen no sign of an accident. Here is hoping.

  • Any more news on this?

  • No, no news, but a Greenwich Cyclists saw this on the day:

Cyclist incident at Vanbrugh Hill/Trafalgar Road.

I happened to be passing this afternoon and saw a huge police/ambulance/fire brigade presence closing off Trafalgar Road. Large lorry stationary just where it turned left up Vanburgh Hill. Bike on ground by front wheels.

Observer said cyclist had been under lorry for an hour but can't confirm this is correct.

  • bleak roads out that way indeed.

  • Hi, I just registered to post the latest news - I live and cycle round this part of London. The online site ''greenwich.co.uk'' has this as its latest post:

''I am sorry to say that the 66 year old woman died on Thursday 10th Dec. She was a popular local recently retired careworker and will be sadly missed.''

Note: it's not confirmed and there seems to be nothing at all in the local press but I can't imagine that someone would go out of their way to post that message.

Sorry to be the bearer of what looks like very bad news. This junction is just one along from where a woman, Adrianna was killed by a hit-and-run HGV in May - I'd just heard that someone had been charged in connection with this and, almost immediately, there's another one down.

  • sad news.

yes i remember the adrianna death.

    another email to the mp.

  • So sad to hear this.

  • I live very near there, really sad news.

  • Note: it's not confirmed and there seems to be nothing at all in the local press but I can't imagine that someone would go out of their way to post that message.

I only live just up the hill from this, but I've been mostly off my bike for a couple of weeks, so I've been getting the bus across the heath, rather than coming down Vanburgh Hill, so I only just found out about this.

That's right by the bike shop, so I asked them about it just now whilst I was on the phone. They said there was definitely an accident but they don't know any details (they had been told it was mentioned on the BBC, although I can't find anything on the website), however there are flowers all over the railings now apparently. Which I guess confirms that this was unfortunately a fatality.

Condolences to family and friends. I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Yep lots of flowers and a whiteness appeal sign.

  • It's at the end of my road. Saw the signs and flowers but didn't realise it was a cyclist. RIP..

  • r.i.p

  • Just down the road from me as well - desperately sad.

Last night, I noticed Adrianna's ghost bike is missing - anyone know why? The Man U flag that was draped over it is still there.

  • best wishes to her friends and family.

  • Just a little update: the police were doing a reconstruction of the accident this afternoon using Stella's bike, which was undamaged in the accident, and the actual lorry (not an articulated vehicle - a medium sized DAF). I spoke to the deceased's sister for a while and she told me that Stella was a very experienced cyclist, also that because her nearest hill, Maze Hill, was too steep for her (it was a very chunky-looking MTB and she was 67), she used the Woolwich Road to get to the gentler Westcombe Hill for her regular destination of Charlton Village.

Somewhat surprisingly, Stella was not caught in the drag sweep of the lorry but went under the front nearside wheel.

If it's any consolation, the police seemed to be taking the reconstruction very seriously, with driver line of sight photos and theodolites and all sorts of other gear. Let's hope it leads to a fair and just outcome.
