Anyone else getting 504 gateway time outs and database errors?

Well am having issues with 504 gateway server time outs and then trying to access private messages I get a v bullitin message saying the database has made a error.

Sorry for the trouble. There was some issue with our provider and we fixed it.

OK, So the problem was that there was a flood on the network. The flood was too low to trigger the alarms, but high enough that it resulted in about 20% packet loss for our particularly cluster of machines.

This is good in that I know it's not the way I've set things up, but bad in that there's nothing stopping it happen again. If it happens again... we move host.

They need to tweak their alerting thresholds...

What's a 'flood on the network'? Is that always a malicious attack (as per what Google results suggest it is) or can it be caused by just normal traffic?

As I indicated, I did Google but was left none the wiser about whether it could be non-malicious. I've only just come across the term 'innocent flooding'. I'd heard of things like denial of service attacks, but never of flooding.
