Shimano freehub into fixed

Posted on
  • Hi,
Recent convert to single speeds. I've been putting mile after mile through the rear shimano freehub now & I'm wanting to move to fixed.
I've looked about, and read Sheldons take on it but I as an engineer refuse to see how the conversion Could be that hard & is worth more than my whole wheel.

Somebody must have 'jammed' the paws open before now.

Anybody converted one of these hubs?

    Cheers.

  • surly fixxer. job done.

any other method will not be very safe.

  • have you got a soldering iron?

  • That fixxer is $80. I'd rather eBay up a wheel!

I've got a welder and a soldering iron. I also don't mind a one way trip. If the hub can never be resored I don't care. I've read to weld up the bearings, I'll look this afternoon. I'd rather weld the paws into the engaged condition or 'fill' the hub with epoxy.

  • yeah I was joking about the soldering iron

keep both brakes is my advice if you weld it

  • There's an easy way that works for freehubs and multiple freewheels.
I did it several times, always worked well and also easy to convert it back.
Just open the locknut of the bearing system till the pawls are visible.
Push some small pieces of nails, spokes, e.g. behind the pawls to fixate them.
Put the locknut back in place, assemble the wheel, set a sprocket & spacers in such a way that chainline is okay. Job done.

As mentioned, I have good experience with this. Don't know why it shouldn't be safe.
Must say I'm not a skidder, just ride a bike on the track and sometimes a fixed gear for commuting. No tricks and stuff...

just sayin' - doesn't sound very vorsprung durch technik is all...

    You dropped your screwdriver...

  • stick that fucker up there ^ in the freehub, and jam it in. fixed. done.
and no im not talking about you Platini ;)

  • I welded the bugger up, welded the outer to the inner and smelted the bearings to mush. I kept my front brake on and have given it some stick it seems to be holding.
Riding a fixed is a brand new way of riding!

  • u got any pics blake
