K.L.F coined the term 'Chillout' on their 1990 release 'Chillout'
I believe its available on youtube in four parts however much better appreciated in its entirety at daytime, melting into a sofa somewhere, with colourful patterns behind the eyelids. fragments of the previous evenings house music coalescing and disappearing again in ones brain, the whole dreamlike experience aided by a relaxing dose of M.D.M.A-in 1990.John Martyn would like that ^ good call.

I like that ^ nice
I should have been clearer, since John Martyn is classified as "folk", i would describe any "chillout" music as any piece that makes you feel so.
I'm really not a big fan of classifying music into pigeon holes, it's how it makes you feel.

yeah totally. it could be Debussy. anything that fits the mood, maybe 'mood music' is more appropriate. unfortunately the thread might not be big enough if I start posting clips-lets keep it simple and say that John Martyns Solid Air is also a stone classic of the genre.
always on my list. -

Pretty much anything on the Liquid Sound Design record label, which has been sadly inactive for quite some time now. But especially this album:

i listen to alot of hardcore punk, metal, crust, grind and other various "non-chillout" artists, and i can say that my favourites are probably:
spoon
the weakerthans
pavement
explosions in the sky
sigur ros
burial
postal service
dinosaur jr.
appleblim
mae
copeland
the aggrolitesthat stuff ranges a few genres i guess, and it's mainly from my work mp3 stash, which is typically chilled out because i have enough shit to deal with in a day >:/

This was performed on Halloween night at The Royal Festival Hall, Steve Reich with London Sinfonieta, with three shorter pieces in the first half. This piece^ is mindblowing to* watch* performed, as I knew the sound of it well but had no idea what a strange method of group playing is used - there is no conductor, and different cues are signalled by different musicians through the piece. Sometimes people just wander about the stage and start playing different instruments, or just sit down and have a 'rest'. It was amazing. Truly stunning.
'Drumming' is being performed in February at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, btw.

And Ultramarine - Every Man and Woman is a Star
Oh, and Nightmares on Wax - Smokers Delight - top class
@mf - I remember Mo and Billy Boy complaining that a certain section of Chill Out was too dancey, and having to get out of their beds to have a dance - ha!!
Must get some Biosphere on the go, and Sun Electric O'Locco.....the Orbital Therapy mix parts 1 to 3

Sun Electric! I was thinking about that one just now...Ultramarine, lost my copy of that wicked single... Wouldn't mind hearing that LP again now.
EDIT what about Palatial, remember that tune!?
Post your favorite chillout music here.
I love chillout because it mellows me, puts my thoughts in a comfy place, sends me away to a nicer place where i can just be.
With my headphones on, legs propped up near the woodburner, rollie burning slowly in my hand with a glass of sauvignon in the other, i cannot think of a better place to be.
here are some of my favourites (Sound a million times better on CD than on you tube)
John Martyn- Small Hours
No other tune sounds like it, totally original and amazing.

Sia- Dont bring me Down
One of the most angelic, beautiful voices.

Sia -Breathe me (four tet remix)

Massive Attack and Morcheeba are brilliant but there are many others.
