Phil Wood high flange hubs + freewheel?

Posted on
  • I'm pretty sure this will be sacrilege to many but I would like to run a freewheel on a double fixed Phil high flange hub.

I'm concerned that there won't be enough threads forthe beefy freewheel - is there enough space to put a Shimano / White Industries cog? I don't have any experience with Phil hubs so would love some advice from those who have used them.

    Thanks...

  • Noone?

  • buy a single speed hub.

  • He's right you know.

  • Fruitbat lives!

  • I thought this might elicit that kind of response! Fair enough, just have an offer for some Phil wheels that's all...

  • long live fruitcase

  • Try them fixed, you might like it

  • There is plenty of room. I regret buying a fixed free phil. The resale on them is shit. On here especcially. Fixed Nazis. Hello Tim. When are we going to see you again?

  • @ Skully, murtle and everyone else; I've missed you too

  • So Jaygee reckons yes. i would say just do it. As long as the put plenty of grease or copperslip on the threads to make sure you have no trouble getting it off, what have you got to lose? You're unlikely to damage the thread. And its a doublefixed anyway.

Jaygeesus i'd like a fixed free phil, why, you got one you want to sell? I will pay you in incomplete decks of cards and toast crumbs. Or money.

  • mark I've got some high flange fixed fixed phils, and I intend to run freewheels on both sides, its doable, do as skully says, lots of grease so you can get said freewheel off again.

  • I would jump at the chance to get some NOS toast crumbs Skully. Unfortunately, it is what I run on the Surly, so NFS. You probably wouldn't want it either. It has done many miles of abusive labour, including some grass track. I'm taking them to the new forest for a soothig mud pack as I type thi.

  • Thanks Skully and Cornelius, I thought you could, just didn't want to drop the cash and discover no go!

  • I've run a white industries freewheel on a Phil high fixed/fixed for many months with no issues. It's taken all the abuse polo could throw at it so I doubt you'd have any problems with whatever discipline you want it for.

  • fixed/free is wank, you can definitely run a freewheel on fixed.

  • I run freewheel on a fixed/fixed HF Dura Ace, they are completely fine so far(1 month).

  • it will be fine. there is plenty of thread there. and you can still put a fixed cog on the other side.
    if you should want to.

  • Thanks all. Appreciate it.

  • Just put a decent freewheel on it. No cheap nasty ones, like Shimano or Dicta. White Industries FTW.
