  • Hi

I need a replacement miche chainring. Are they all intercompatible? My bike is a fairly old Olmo 7 gear bike with Miche double chainset, so presumably does not have the new thin chain. Will it work with your chainring? I dont konw a lot about these matters.

    Thanks for your help

    Dan

  • No, not all Miche chainrings are compatible with all Miche cranks, you'll need to determine what BCD your crankset is first, see this article for how to do that http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html#bcd

The chainring i have is 135 BCD which is a size used by Miche & Campagnolo. It is for a 1/8th" chain, the larger size if your bike had/has gears it will use the 3/32nd" size.

There are quite a few threads here about mixing the 2 sizes: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread19545.html & http://www.londonfgss.com/thread17054.html for example.

  • Read http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ cover to cover first, it'll give you a good grounding on bike tech & maintenance.

  • Hi

It does appear to be 135BCD & 80 (ie 79.5). What I am not altogether clear about is the 3/32 vs 1/8 business.

Your post was a bit unclear. Am I right in thinking that it is likely I have a 3/32 or smaller chain, so that will not work with your 1/8 chainring?

    Cheers

    Dan

  • I'd like to take that Selle Italia off your hands, and if you would throw in the caliper too, I promise to put it to good use!

Not sure if I can p.m as I'm an utter newb, but can pay paypal if that suits you.

1/8" is a larger size used only on single speed (freewheel and fixed) bikes. if you have a geared bike your chain will not fit on a 1/8" chainring.

  • 1/8" is a larger size used only on single speed (freewheel and fixed) bikes. if you have a geared bike your chain will not fit on a 1/8" chainring.

    But a 1/8th" Chain will fit a 1/8th" chainring/sprocket AND a 3/32nd chainring/sprocket....!

philosopherdan, if you can post a brief description of what you're trying to acheive maybe we can give you more suitable advice...

For example if you have a road frame that you are going to convert to fixed, youre going to need a new back wheel to run a fixed cog with a lockring, that cog can be either 3/32nd" or 1/8th", both would work with the Miche chainring and a new 1/8th" chain....

  • @Kid_Scruff: emailed you re. Saddle & Caliper..

  • Thanks for your advice. I am sticking with a regular road bike geared setup so will seek a 3/32 ring.

    All the best
