We cannot accurately recommend the right size BB without knowing what your ideal chainline is.
You need to do some measuring between the sprocket & hub centre.

Thanks mate, i'll measure it up tonight then post it here

can I just measure what my rear chain line is and then you advise me on a BB and crankset to complement this?
-
• #5
yes. half the OLD minus the distance between cog and dropout/trackend.

Don't know what you mean by that mate sorry.

Search for transmission database. Look at Fsa vero for cheap cranks.

• #8
whack the ring on the inside of the crank
redish rear wheel to fit

Shimano UN54 or UN72 BBs are cheap, good and come in a few lengths.

I don't know what length I need though mate, Thought maybe someone could advise me whos done a peugeot conversion before, Is it worth just ordering a new BB and Crankset then just sorting it out from there?
What length BB should I get as a starting point? -

Crap I forgot to measure it , I'll have a go at measuring tomorrow then put it up here.

• #12
pick the best legnth which will give you the bset chainline, but make sure that the length will clear the chain stays. I use current geared setups for a rough aim.

What do you mean clear the chain stays? I'm currently using a dual chain ring from when it had gears, and running on the smaller of the two. Can I not buy a new crankset and shorter bottom bracket to match the chain line?

Right guys,
Measured all my crap up tonight.Front chainline is 54mm and Rear chain line is 49mm. These are as accurate as I could get with a tape measure, my current BB is 121.5 so am I correct in thinking that if I buy a BB which is 6mm shorter 3 on each end then my life will be good with an (almost) perfect chainline. Either that or i'm missing something really stupid!

yes. if you have measured your rear chainline correctly. to do this, measure the distance between rear drop outs. divide this by 2. lets call this number X. next, measure the distance from dropout to cog, and minus this from X.
did you do this?

yep have done that one mate, rear chainline is about 49mm, does this sound correct?
p.s. just realised that isn't much between a 72 shell and 68, will my be a 72 on the pug?
I think i'm going to order the 73 x 118mm**BS Shimano UN54 pretty sure mine is a 73

A picture of the bike would really help...
1) Per my response to your other thread, not convinced you want a 73mm BB. Course, I can't say definitively, but if it is a road frame, I would be fairly certain you need a 68.
2) 49mm chainline means you have loads of options. The cheapest of which might just be to move the chainring from the outside of the spider to the inside (which might be enough to get the chainline bang on as it is).
FWIW, my back wheel / sprocket combo gives me a chainline of barely over 40mm, which means I needed the shortest possible BB (103mm) AND I had to put the chainring on the inside of the spider (I bought Eighthinch cranks / chainring). Lucky my chainstay was crimped (can't remember the proper term), which means I don't have a chainring clearance problem.

Thanks for the help mate, got the BB on the way I actually ordered 2 because I wasn't sure what size would be best! Think I measured the BB I needed based on a 73 size rather than 68 so I will hopefully have a nice and straight chainline once they arrive!
Thanks again!
Right I've just converted my peugeot to Fixed gear and am thinking of changing the BB and chain set too.
I currently don't have the tools or the knowledge to know what BB to order and Chain set to fit it. Can anyone recommend a BB to start with and a Chain set which will fit my current chain line. At the moment I am still using the small ring on the Chain set if that helps at all.
Sorry if this post is a big fat epic fail please point me in the right direction!!
