  • Can you make a wheel suitable for screw on gears fixed? Im asking because someone has offered me a 7 speed compatable screw on wheel that i like but not sure if i can make it fixed? If you can how do i do it and where sells the parts?

  • wtf ???????

  • If you use a fixed cog it will likely unscrew - and you will be killed to death inside the London.

You could use a screw on freewheel just fine.

  • im guessin no still, my thinking is the lockring would unscrew, just wanted to see if there where any smart ideas i hadnt thought of!

  • File a slot or two into the thread and when the cog is fully tightened up whack some braze or something in there
    Would work
    but i wouldn't do it

  • you can't if you don't want the potential for the cog to unscrew leading to serious injury and/or death to you and/or others.

just get a freewheel on it or a proper track hub with a reverse threaded lockring.

Once tightened, there is no force acting on the freewheel that would make it unscrew, in theory you wouldn't even need a lock ring.

  • freewheels don't have lockrings. freewheels won't unscrew without a freewheel tool. a freewheel is not a cog. a freewheel means you can stop pedalling with the wheel still spinning.

    See !

    :)

    No, no, no !

  • yap yap yap...

    semantics!

  • oh and could the OP/VB move this to mechanic's? merci.

  • you can use a BB lock ring to secure a fixed sprocket on that old 7 speed

  • ... and die

there is a reason this set up is know as a 'suicide hub'

  • +

  • Stupid question but what about using some thread lock or glue?

  • just search suicide hub... then decide against it.

  • How about twine?

  • You could weld the fucker in place. Just pick your cog carefully.

  • Yes, and you could fashion a one piece fixed hub/sprocket combo with your bare hands from a lump of iron ore.

    ...or buy a £15 hub.

  • ...obviously after first creating a suitably robust alloy. Metallurgy is not my forte.

  • Stupid question but what about using some thread lock or glue?

there is a reason track hubs have reverse lockring threads. it is that bb lockrings, thread lock, and glue are fucking shite at holding cog's on.

    Holding cog's what on?

  • His chain..
