26 x 1 3/4 Westwood Rims and BIG chains

  • Anyone had any experience with getting hold of some of these?

My research so far (thank you Velorution) tells me they're 571mm, defunct and no one makes them anymore.

I also notice though that according to Sheldon, Schwinn cruisers have them. I'm going to start asking round some cruiser shops tomorrow but I wondered if anyone had ever had to deal with them.

It's an old trade bike by the way. Like a butcher's bike.

And while I'm on the subject I have a 3/16" x 1/2" chain as well. I'm guessing these are going to be available from motorbike shops, but same deal, has anyone seen them?

  • The schwin rims are a different size to an english cycle, or is this for a cruiser?

Try the vintage bike company, they do steel rims at £20 each.

With regaurd to the chain try a bearing supplier such as bramer but if its a single speed cycle chain I believe that can only be a 3/16 or 1/8 wide.

  • Chain, no idea but lynx is right on the rims - I got some for an old Hercules.

He did take ages to deliver but knows his stuff.

EDIT - i'd be surprised if you needed anything other than a standard 1/8" chain unless what you have is really odd.

  • Dam, I thought those schwinn rims might be the jackpot.

The old bicycle company was my second piece of research today, he can't get this size of rim, and there's not enough clearance to play around with a bigger one. I might have to look around for something nos.

And it definitely is a 3/16 chain. It's an old trade bike and they all used to have that size. It's massive.

  • might be worth speaking to Paul Stiyosh at Cycles of Yesteryear www.cyclesofyesteryear.com his website isn't great, but he might be able to help.

  • Those chain dimensions are proving odd, 3/16 wide is a really odd size and being a bit difficult to source atm.

  • Cheers for this thread! I am looking for 28 x 1 1/2" rims, don't really wanna spend a lot as this is going to be a bit of a beater (found the old roadster frame in the canal, frame: beautiful condition. Everything else: rusted thru)

Apparently Simpson Cycles stock them at around £20 each. But I am still shopping around so anything you've come across let me know!

Also what's the deal with brakes on these steel rims, where can I source some new pads?

  • Citygent, PM for you.

  • Sorry, I though it about his rims and chains

Fibrax for brake pads. Or Roxy borrowed a dutch bike with some salmon coloured pads on its rod brakes that she claimed actually worked. The rubber ones are a bit theoretical, rather than truly practical.

  • there are some heavy duty antigrind bmx chains that are 3/16" , but they are £25+ and are also very short. i had one, very noisy and killed 3 chain tools.

Could you send me a link to their website? I am lookin for a fixed gear rim thats 26 x 1 3/4 but can not find one anywhere for cheapish.

Also on a side note, All I need is a 26 in rim could I get 1/2 or 1.25 and it still work if it was originally 1 3/4?

  • Whoa, it was 2 and a half years ago! Also there's google, but here you go: http://www.simpsoncycles.co.uk/

If the width of the rim is all that is changing it should be fine providing you have the appropriate frame clearance (if you were going wider) or tyre width (if narrowing).

    Fraid not. 26 x 1 3/4 = etrto 571
26 x [any decimal number] = etrto 559 (smaller, for mountain bikes)
    26 x 1 1/2 = etrto 584 (larger, 650b) unless its Canadian

sticking to the 3 digit etrto number has yielded best results for me
