So I picked a Mike Burrows carbon seatpost up the other day, but it's a cm too big for me. I know it is possible to shorten (some) carbon seatposts by sawing off a few inches.

Is it possible with this seatpost too?

    (Nicked the picture from here)

  • Seat posts only have to go in an inch or so past the bottom of the top tube, much beyond this point on most modern frames the butting kicks in and the seat tube offers no additional support as the post is not touching the inner walls of the seat tube.

I always pretty ignore the minimum insert mark and use the above rule, the other factor is leverage, if you have 3 foot of post out of the bike and 5 inches in - the leverage will stiff rip your seat cluster apart regardless of post insertion

  • I'd just buy a new one!

  • Same, don't ruin a perfectly good post.

  • If you decide to buy a new one, the one you have looks like the one I need so would buy it off you.

i meant sawing of the top of the seatpost, not the bottom. Some carbonposts have the ability to remove the saddleclamp and shorten it.

not sure if i'm going to sell it soon, I'm getting a new frame soon so depending on geometry I need to get rid of it or not

  • I'd say its safer not to saw carbon meself!! It is usually bonded as complete piece when its fired and sawing it will expose the fibres and could weaken the piece.

    Wouldn't do that.
Just 1 to 2 cm max.
Make sure you've enough seatpost left in the seat tube.
If it's 1cm too long, cut off max. 12mm or so.

Are you sure it ill go deep enough in your frame and that the "oval" part will not be the problem?

A bit strange, because the Mike Burrows posts are not that long and offer a limited adjustment range.
If the post is too long, cannot go deep enough into the seat tube, I doubt that the post is the problem and that cutting it is the right solution.

Plus: if you cut it, there's no way you ever can sell it.

  • he wants to cut of the top of that ugly thing, just bring it by and i will saw it off for you, right after i am done with sawing cennys headtube :D

  • haha you will saw anything if you have the chance

    Glasbergen?

  • not sure, if he is from leiden than, yup

  • Does Mike Burrows do carbon then? I see him on the train into work quite a bit. I always know when he's on because there's a cargo bike in the bike carriage, usually with a mad frame strapped to it. Was a carbon track frame last time. Thought he only did steel though.

If you've done that pls let me know. I'd like to do same with mine.

The saddle clamp is bonded (glued) into place - remove the glue, chop the post and re-bond - not too difficult if you know what you are doing.

Would be easier to buy a new post or put a faux faring onto a straight (non-aero) post.
