the clue is to avoid brick lane, i think you already know that.
where's that tayabs place? that's ok

Another vote for Tayabs- very good and very cheap.
Plus it's not on Brick Lane, which is a huge advantage

Tayyabs is on Fieldgate St. Off whitechapel rd.
Lahore Kebab house not far away off Commercial Rd serves up Pakistani curries. The Nihari there is top drawer. Some of the best eats I've had in this city.

I can recommend Mai'da on Bethnal Green road, right at the junction with BL (just after the Beigel shops).
Their Tandoors are on view to customers, see them skewering and whacking the lots of lovely kinds of breads in you've never seen anywhere else. Their starters are really worth exploring especially. Ask for advice on getting a good balance to share around with everybody. There's a chicken starter, a skewer wrapped in chilli paste with shredded beetroot, that is possibly the nicest thing I can imagine. The kind of place that sells Lamb Kurma but not Chicken kurma ... Kurma is a lamb dish, so that's what they serve. And it actually is spicy! Just not with chillis. You get what I'm trying to say here?
Mai'da doesn;t serve alcohol. You can presumably bring your own if you want to drink that stuff. You'll note the clientele are mostly south asian. They do all these mad Malteser / Ferrero Rocher milkshakes and stuff. Also check out Tayyabs on the street behind the Mosque on Whitchapel road. Famous and good. Eat kofte and naan there, and their pumpkin curry is great too. VERY reasonably priced back in the day I haven't been for ages so not sure now.

Tayyabs is fine if you feel like queuing for three quarters of an hour. Cliftons is the only place I go.

Lahore Kebab House - amazing straight up desi food
used to have a punjabi girlfriend who took me there, plus one of her uncles was a head waiter so was always treated right
it has got a bit swanky in the past few years but food is generally pretty great and BYO

Couldn't see the attraction of tayyabs, wait for an hour then get rushed out of your seat when you've finished eating. The food is average too.

Lahore, is that that massive place with about ten thousand tables? If so then yes, great scram.

Do these two phenomenon not go hand in hand?

My flatmate went there for a curry and walked straight in..
granted, it was a curry for breakfast. i've yet to have the pleasure.
There are several Lahore's, run seemingly not all by the same people. there's one just off commerical road which does fantastic curry. although we did have difficulty working out which one of us had which when we got them home from their takeaway. the lamb starters are excellent.

Anyone who knows anything about curry does NOT go to Brick Lane. It's a myth that you get good curries down there, everyone I've had, my dog could lay better

Tooting is where it's at for curry.
but of course, east end hipsters implode if they travel more than 3 miles (unless it's by car or train to their parents houses in the country)

That's the one Superprecise... It's pretty frantic in there but it's all about the food.

Southall FTW
hello,
Keeping getting served not so good curries on Brick Lane. Does anyone know somewhere that actually does decent curries round there? I'm thinking natural looking and tasty..
cheers
