The abuse some of the people in the article have had is terrible though, no one deserves some of that. Not sure I agree with the idea of legislation though.

It's a very complex issue but assaulting people and discriminating against them because of their physical appearance is illegal in this country, and rightly so. I see no reason as to why this should not be extended to overweight people.

That's not why i posted it. I just find it amazing to think that this kind of think could be given any credence what so ever.

It's the idea that doctors should be stopped from encouraging people to loose weight, it's one of the jobs of doctors to be that nagging voice in your head encouraging you to improve your health be it loose weight, quite smoking, drink less e.t.c

I'm pretty sure assaulting someone for any or no reason at all is illegal in this country.

@tommy - is that a doctor's job? Or should they be there to treat people?
I fully understand that we should be encouraging people to eat healthily and take regular exercise but as a society we lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles whilst the food we eat is less and less 'natural'.
As I said, it's a complex issue.

It's one of their jobs, prevention is better than a cure for all involved.

gonna go and get on my bike, ride home from work, I do this every day I am fit and healthy. sure you can do the same.
there its not complex, people are lazy, if they did more exercise and ate less shit we wouldnt have an 'obesity epidemic'. -

"Not everyone has a free choice about controlling their weight."
I tend to agree. We're not all the same are we, our bodies operate at different rates and we're born with and inherit certain characteristics. Sometimes being bigger is a part of that. Or being slim, as I am.

I totally agree that some people find it easier to stay the same weight /loose weight etc but that doesn't mean you have no 'free choice'.
It comes down to laziness. If someone doesn't want to stop eating biscuits or microwave meals and spend their evenings walking round the block or up and down their stairs to loose weight then they aren't going to. Most people just can't be bothered to do what it takes to maintain a healthy body weight.

overweight people are sadly discriminated against, unfortunately the young are the most vunerable here. Learning about eating properly and a moderate amount of exercise should be and hopefully a priority in school education.
I recently worked on a new hospital project where the NHS client asked to re-define architectural guidelines for Bariatric treatment, the findings and predictions were truly shocking.. like access, mobility, treatment, procedures all with extra cost to normal NHS funding of new buildings..

Dont agree with this. If your an addictand you want to come off drugs how are you supposed to if there's no help? Doing iit on your own, cold turkey takes an incredible amount of mental strength, which i think most addicts would lack

why do some people take drugs, why do some people overeat?
it's not quite as simple as some of the 'oh they're just lazy fookers' brigade would have you think
Looks like my favored retort to dangerous drivers is under legal threat.
