Help please - paint in BB threads

Hi,
I have just got my frame back from being powdercoated. Great finish. Unfortunately I didn't screw anything into the BB casing and the powdercoating people didn't plug it properly so I now have paint in the BB threads.

I have UTFS, but wasn't able to find any threads related to this. Has anyone had a similar problem?

BB cups should screw in easily by hand, but I imagine the paint is preventing that.

A bike shop will be able to chase the BB threads to remove the paint.

Any tips on how to do this yourself...? I live in France, and my closest bike shop is Decathlon, which isn't exactly the best bike shop in the world...

I would use Nitro Mors paint stripper. Be careful not to get it on any external areas though.

Cheers, i used nitromors, and it got all the paint off and the threads were clean as a whistle. unfotunately i had already knackered the thread the first time i tried to screw in the bb. the local bike shop are currently sorting it out.

ah that sucks man. i'd always recommend that if something doesn't thread properly, as soon as you feel unusual resistance to take it out and try again, or get the threads cleared if there is an obstruction. patience is extremely important when it comes to bicycle maintenence.

Next time, put 2 big washers on the sides of the BB shell and the same on the head tube. Fix them with a threaded rods and ordinairy nuts.
Cut the washers free with a hobby knife after painting to prevent that larger pieces of powdercoat will chip off.

By the way, Decathlon is not that bad.
I can imagine that they have HP and BB tools, even for milling, facing and chasing threads.

i'm also from belfast, where did you get the powdercoating done and was it expensive?

i looked round a few places - ended up getting it done at universal industrial spraying - kilwee industrial estate dunmurry (BT17 0HD).

you can have any colour as long as it's grey - seriously limited colour pallete but cheap at 40 quid and a really good job.

the other alternative was i c powdercoating near donaghadee - looks like they would provide a better range of colours.

hopefully will have my bike finished next week - will post a pic in the 'anyone from belfast' thread - keep an eye out

Im of the opinion that you should always chase and face frames
that have just been painted. Extra money, yes, but it will make your
components happier and your frame last longer.
This is something you need a proper tapper for, I don't think paint
stripper will do the same thing.

Cheers, I have just got a new bike and i'm thinking of using my old lugged frame to build a nice singlespeed for longer rides. Hopefully they do can do white. Is this your first fg bike?

it is indeed - i would be surprised if they didn't have white.

cool, when you get it up and running, we go out on a wed night for a spin. sayin that i havnt been in a few weeks but the new bike should get the motivation levels up again. :)

With my limited experience i would guess that an old bb would do the job. just be careful when removing it not to peel the paint off the frame. maybe cut the paint first as suggested by* Dutch Cheese above*
