For Sale: Lost treasure or worthless heap of junk?

Posted on
  • Hi All,

Thought I would give SS a go, bought this fine specimen off bumtree, so noone but myself to blame. I thought I would give rebuilding it a go, I now realise that is way beyond my competence so - any offers for it? As you can see, the chainset is worn down to the bone, the rear cog is completely misaligned, the wheels don't bear talking about.

Question is : Would anyone want it as a project? Not expecting to get back the £70 I paid for it (doh! didn't know what to look for then), but open to offers. Seriously, is something like this worth anything more than a trip to the tip?

    cheers

  • I'd probably take the frame off you. What size?

  • New set of budget wheels built up flip flop and a new chain ring and you're good to go.

For your first foray into the SS or fixed wheel world this would be a fine frame.

Take it apart, give it a good clean and regrease and the projects a goodun.

You'll have a reasonably priced beater and you will learn a few things along the way.

Failing that flog it and let someone else have a go.

  • Looks like it'd be around the 56/58cm mark but that's just a guess.

  • New bb to sort out chainline and a new chainring to replace the worn one and you're on your way.
Don't give up because you're almost there. What's wrong with the wheels?

  • Keep it mate, it's not very hard to get it back to working order, just consult Sheldon Brown a bit more.

if you're after bits and bobs, keep watching the classified section, you're likely to get some nice part for cheap.

  • thats a good starting point for a first fg or ss
new chainring 8-10 quid from brick lane bikes

wash and polish and your up and running

there's plenty o'people here who can give advise and tip on some of themechanicing

for some reason that CH number on the tubing rings a bell isn't that a raleigh serial number or something maybe slightly better than the bog standard raleigh fayre

  • £70! Good starting point as mentioned. The Mechanic and Fixing threads are your new friends.

Everything you need to know in there.

  • I've seen far worse. On scumtree too.

  • Looks like there's not much left to do

    sort it out

  • Don't be afraid - just learn. Better to balls things up on something like that than something bowel-shatteringly expensive to replace.

+1 to all the comments here... otherwise to all those who post "fixie singlespeed bits to build a bike for under £100" in the **Wanted **section buy this!

  • PM'd. I had my bike stolen from outside Tesco last night, and I'm in urgent need of a replacement. I feel like a bit of a twot for being the first person who isn't encouraging you to do this up (sorry), but I this is perfect.

    Cheers

  • Plenty of bites to come this evening, I suspect. People will be looking for a winter beater. Alternatively, keep it and nurture your skills.

  • Depending on frame size, I'd be interested.

  • Raleigh sprint! got given one of them when I was 11, do it up, fuck it, its a bike and it will become what you make of it, good luck and have fun.
