  • would it work or will i end up trashing the booties or will the rubbign of the straps just let water in?
i think im too clumsy at skidding to use my spds but i could really do with some dry foot action on the daily commute

  • Awesome. Hipster realises "the look" is a bit shit for practical commuting, chaos reigns. :P

I don't know, I've never used overshoes. I would imagine they'd die pretty quick though. Stick with clipless. It's for champions. Plus your 'street' shoes don't get fucked up in the rain.

  • overshoes with straps and clips should be fine after a while you will get some wear or tear but I never had any trouble in the past

but that was 30 years ago...................

Exactly! Once upon a time there was only clips and straps, and we did ok then. All bikes were made of steel, Changing gear meant reaching for the down tube, only weirdy beardies rode fixed wheel bikes and 4 channels on tv was 1 too many!

  • cant see how they wouldnt stand up to being in toe clips - most of the over shoes i've used and seen are pretty tough - i did see one pair on a bloke that looked like they would withstand nuclear war: i'd go for those. cant say what they were tho :P

  • Depends how often you take your feet out. Every time you jam your foot in the clips you risk wearing and tearing the wetsuit material. I guess it is pretty durable though.. My toe warmers are fucking ancient and still hanging on by a thread.

  • Stick with clipless.

    I second this.

  • flip-flops!!??!! Cold...but no wet shoes!! :-)

I havent, and dont want to because they make you look like a pixie, worn over-shoes since I discovered toe warmers. Great invention! I like to think of them as shoe hats.

  • maybe ill get get some new cleats, tighten them pedals up and man up a bit (then put on some little noddy style bootie overshoes)
just have the fear that im going to come unclipped whilst trying to stop

hah but I spent more time on the track then the road, but over shoes where a god send for the road when it pissed down with rain but I reckon today you'd look like a knob ;o))

I always thought overshoes were retarded, which is why I've only ever used toe warmers.

They look less retarded and do the bulk of blocking the mesh/keeping the cold air out of your shoes that booties would do.

  • i look like a knob regardless of what i have on my feet, id just prefer they were dry if possible

  • there is a guy i know who has super glued trainer soles to neoprene over shoes....it cant' be right?? but he swears by them!!
    kinda like bike gaiters!!

  • I accept wet feet as a part of riding in the rain.

Newspaper in them so they dry a bit before home.

    Job done.

  • I imagine if you used those plastic ones that they wouldn't tear up the neoprene as badly as metal toeclips would.

You can get single strap ones in most bike shops and 14bikeco were stocking a double strap version.

To be honest, 30 years ago I was only 5.
But I used to wrap tesco bags around my feet inside my shoes, and then had woolly socks with a hole cut in the bottom (for cleat access) slipped over the shoes for the winter club runs in my teen years for the road. I eventually saved up enough to buy the cheapest overshoes from an advert in the back of cycling weekly, they didnt specify the colour.....when they turned up in the post they were *SILVER! *
Needless to say, I dont really like overshoes anymore.

True Dat! screwed up balls of newspaper= dry by home time. I even have ready rolled balls of paper in my drawer at work, can be used over and over again.

  • I just use copies of the Metro or London Paper discarded by coworkers. I don't pre-roll. I don't re-use.

  • I miss heated flooring as that is a treat on your shoes and drying them out.

  • I've never had heated flooring. You're a posh cunt aren't ya?

    :P

ha ha I think I had the same pair....... looked great with a mauve road bike with orange tubes

  • as said above once upon a time there was'nt another way.

i remember even using old white thick socks as overshoes as many did for winter club runs. (they looked wuite cool and did the job) others used duegi overshoes and i am sure a couple of riders used neoprene socks from diving shops with holes cut in the bottoms so that their nailed on cleats could still work

I dont know, I wasnt going for the Jetsons look.

  • If you really want your feet to stay dry I've got some gore tex chainsaw boots you can buy off me

they weigh a little over 1.2kg each, but your feet will definitely be dry when you take them off
