they are both designed to work with road calipers. Will work ok with canti's or tektro mini v brakes. You'd be better off running avid shimano v brake levers if you want v brakes!

I saw that in the reviews and on their websites, but then I checked FlickR and found photos of set-ups which used only the cross lever and a brake (no extra road calipers on the end of the drop bars).
I have some sweet Avid V-brake levers, but they don't fit on my OS drop bars. So could I use the levers just on their own, as above, but with a V-Brake?
Apologies for the n00b questions.

You should be able to find the ans on google or Sheldon Brown...
... but as you sound sweet I'll give you one for free ;)
V-brakes need specific leavers bc they pull more cable to pull them together.
So:
- Canti's, caliper and mini V-brakes = most/any brake leavers
V-brakes = ONLY V-brake leavers*
there is a little pully thing you can use to use normal brake leavers - some ppl say they're shit, some say they work (search for it)
EDIT: also, yes you can use cross-tops without drops (I think thats ans'ing the other Q you were asking)
- Canti's, caliper and mini V-brakes = most/any brake leavers

Sweet. Thanks for the info. Basically, my ideal set-up at the moment would be the Salsa Cross Levers, Deda Newton OS drop bars, and Avid Single Digit Ti V-brakes. I don't really want to have to use big unsightly drop bar levers, or different sorts of brakes, or flat bars. Fussy I know.

fwiw I was looking at cross levers recently and in the end went for Tektro RL720, £16.99 the pair from SJS, which was £10 cheaper than the Cane Creeks, look and feel nice enough for the money

That's really good to know - for a pair thats a bargan.
Salsa Cross Levers Vs. Cane Creek Crosstops
Opinions? Will either work with V-brakes, or will I need to use canti's?
Having looked at the photos side-by-side, they seem to be exactly the same, at least externally (apart from the holes in the Salsa's).
