Have you tried taking out the spindle and seeing if you can tighten it down then?

Should not need forcing. Was the fame new? if so, the thread myth need a tap running through it to glean out paint etc.
If the frame is not new, has the thread been threaded or cross threaded? Again a tap will be the answer.
Obviously we are assuming you are screwing it the correct way. (italian thread is both clockwise, english thread has one side screwed in anticlockwise, I forget which).

Does your BB shell have enough thread to take the whole cup?

No, spindle is in. I'm just trying to unscrew it again now as this can't be good, but the spindle is in the right place (going through the middle) so this shouldn't make any difference, should it?

That's what I was thinking - no not new. I am screwing it the right way, bit worried at the moment maybe it didn't go in completely straight?

I think so, to be honest I didn't check. Oops. Will do when I've got it out.

I was just about to service my Sugino 75 BB. This thread may be useful:

It shouldn't if it's the right length, which is what this would establish.

Ah got you, thanks. Took it out and it did go in at a slightly funny angle, there's a point very early on in my BB threads where you can take one of two paths, and I took the wrong one! No permanent damage done though fortunately.
So I've put it back in straight this time and it seems fine - only question now is how tight should I go? Just enough to remove any play?

This is cup and cone right? I only ask because I have sugino cartridge sets here.....
Anyways, if it's cup and cone, loose balls then yup, remove all the play or possibly 99% of it. almost impossible to judge using only the spindle, so fit the right crank to give yourself a lever to rock the spindle with, and to judge the play with. Cup is for adjusting and the lockring for locking, obviously.....
It will need a few goes usually because weird stuff happens like first you don't hold the cup and it moves a bit with the lockring so leaving the whole thing a little tighter than you intended, so you get clever and hold the cup with the pin tool, NOW the lockring pulls the cup slightly looser and the whole thing is too loose..... at some stage you probably shear the pins off the tool for the cup etc etc etc
BUT RELAX!! it'a all part of becoming an experienced mechanic! You'll prolly get it right first time...
Good luck,

Thanks, I think I got it right in the end. Used to sealed units which are a lot easier, it's definitely a zen art though.
Title says most of it, I've got the drive side in but the adjustable side is proving a lot harder. I'm using the green Park SPA-1 pin spanner, which is meant to be the right tool for the job, but I just can't get it in any further - and there's still at least 10mm of the shell sticking out.
I can't get any more torque through the spanner without the pins coming out of the holes. Never had any problems with my BB shell before, it had the original BB which came out without a problem then a campy centaur, didn't have any problems with either of these.
Any ideas?
