And I must get rid of this mac and go open source also.
I also want to buy as much as I can from charity shops. Eg. Christmas cards and other commoditsed items - clinton cards etc should not exist.

Nope. Sorry. Capitalist pig here.
Shouldn't you switch off to conserve power?

No doubt a big problem. I comes down to a matter of balance. And we are becoming too reliant on data and the internet more generally. I have certainly reduced my usage to a negligiable amount.

If your principles are capitalist principles then surely you're living your life in accordance with them?

Or do you ideally put your head in the sand and ignore that inner voice?
I have of late been listening to the latter, and I'm already I feel liberated.......
In time, when I can, I am going to do a job not for the money but because it is a thing I believe in. This I believe is the highest expression of commitment.
Has anyone else attempted to live their live vertically? In the now, deep within themselves and their principles, as opposed to thinking about the horizontal, and what else is out there? I am startin to learn that the verticial is a abyss of unimagainble joy.
I am trying to imagine that you are serious. If you lived in New York, they'd soon have you off to Bellevue though.
Its not even worthwhile trying to discuss the merits of if everyone did just the job that they wanted to do.
That age has passed, and was called Flower Power. It won't return I'm afraid.

Everyone can make excuses. Realistically, if you are without children, you can live on very little. A matter of pounds per week in living expenses. Rent is the only big expense.
I dont want to appear preachy, because half the point of this thread as pointed by out Sharkster is not living according to someone else principles or agenda, but your own. I just feel that a lot of people make decisions based on fear, on what others think etc, and so such thought precludes happiness.
However, the fact of the matter is that we will all probably have to reduce our consumption so that the rest of the world can have a modicum of the comfort we have. What disturbs me is that many of us start to see many luxuries as necessities, like a mobile phone, which is just ridiclous and quite pathetic.

And the point is, to take a step back and say, this is absurd and I dont want to be part of it, is very satisfying, even if it is in vain.

sounds like an opportunity to be taken advantage of and walked over by those paying your wages. if you can be exploited because of your principles you will be.

If you assume negative things, Mrsmyth, it will become a self fulfilling prophecy. And what I descirbe anyhow may entail becoming an entreprenuer.
What is exploitation anyway? In the context of an education, high earning person switching to a lower paying job? Even if I am paid too little for my experience/job, it doesnt matter.
Exploitation is what exists at the low level, still prevelent here but distrubingly so in China etc today

'At the low level'? You mean, amongst people who can't spell and stuff?

You're idea of negligible is, er, not negligible.
Before you start recycling toilet paper so that the world won't end maybe you should deal with the compulsive need for attention that you have which is, sadly, obvious to everyone on here except you. You're trying to think about yourself less? Really? -

My principles were blokes that ran schools.
