  • i got slated last time i posted here for wasting everyone's time, but i'm not sure this problem's been dealt with before, although i'll be looking at the replies through my fingers, but i've noticed i'm having to stop the steering on my bike 'getting away from me' ie, when i try to cycle no-handed i can't; the bike wants to move from side to side. Is this a sign the frame could be bent, or is it a headset problem (it's just been replaced)? or is my bike haunted by a drunken previous owner?

  • "Look Mummy, no hands/teeth."

  • Probably lack of skill.
    Could be fucked headset.
    Could be alignment issue.
Could be bike geo (e.g. track bike is harder to ride hands free compared to tourer)

  • I suggest we film you going down Swain's Lane the wrong way no-handed so that we can see under optimal conditions what might be going wrong. It's a sort of science we use. Swain's Lane is a sort of laboratory. You are a sort of dummy.

  • too tight or indexed headset...

  • I just re-read.. "moves side to side".. that's you sonny jim.. not the headset or fork or frame.

    Deja vu

  • Either fucked headset or poor pedalling technique. What is your core strength like?

  • What is your core strength like?

    No grooming...

  • Sounds like someone needs to souplesse the fuck up.

  • Find a slight downhill and try rolling down it without pedaling. What happens?

  • No grooming...

The old "pretend to be their protector" grooming technique.

  • Oh and back to the OP if your bike does not fit properly that could also make smooth pedalling difficult.

  • The old "pretend to be their protector" grooming technique.

    That's disturbing.

  • thanks folks, i giggled at a few of those comments, and felt light-headed fom all the attention, so i guess you can still be groomed at 37, tee hee. jeez. thanks folks, i don't know if the guy who fitted my headset may have cocked up. anyone visited the bike shop in ealing broadway recently? they seem pretty good. it's an andy pancake build from a few years back so i doubt it's his doing. thanks again though folks. ps i'm available for experiments, sure. reminds me, i was gonna try for the east drinks victoria park sprint time trial record last year, but chickened out. now i'm gonna go for it again. woot

  • The bike shop on Bond St?

    brilliant, yeah, i will, thanks

  • That's disturbing.

We are fully aware of your nodus operandi

  • yeah. shit, you don't work there do you?

    Ha. No. Surly bastards.
Bike Whisperer is far better unless you just happen to want a POS bike off the shelf NOW.

  • I'm sure I asked it before. How many brakes do you have on that bike? Sometimes fixed speed bike will pull to the side, because of it's weight distribution. If the frame and components are very light and you put on some big arse brake lever well, it's heavier on one side. And if you lean forward too much, the whole bike will go all over the place like when you're trying to break out of the peloton during the ascent in Tour De France or something.

  • Is the bike just pulling to one side or oscillating?

just the one brake. this has only been apparent since headset was fitted (i can hear the sherlock holmeses among you raising a knowing eyebrow and sucking your teeth)

    1. remove the brake and try again
    2. if it's the same (brake gives only a slight pull to the side if you let go of the handlebars) the answer is highlighted above...
    3. go back to the person who fitted the headset and give them a slap
