Interesting.
For the benefit of those of us who do not work in academia and therefore would be frowned upon for firing up the wireless could you provide an overview?

I remember him, he was the guy who was entered in the 100m Freestyle and the furthest he'd actually swam ever was 50m, I remember him nearly drowning on the last 50m and the whole stadium getting on their feet and cheering him home..awesome

Very slightly higher bone density but mainly as with most racial correlation things it's social conditioning, parental cultural influences e.t.c

When I went to Mauritius, I noticed that a lot of the locals can't or won't swim, apparently it is because a lot of them are brought up to fear the sea
-
• #9
Woudl bone density really play that much of a part?
I would think muscle to fat ratio would be a much bigger influence.

My friend is half PNG - he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him... so despite growing up on a hot island he swims like a dead fish. You need fat to float.

Not sure I agree with that- a few years ago I was bang on 70 kg's and went swimming pretty often, the beach being just down the road from Birkikarra.
I'd sink like a stone if I stopped swimming, but that was quite handy for nosing around underwater.

It helps but it's not necessary. I am very thin and quite a strong swimmer, the biggest problem I have is that I get cold very quickly, I can easily swim a mile if I don't get cold.

I believe, though I'm probably completely wrong on this (I usually am), the first black man to win a gold at an Olympic swimming event was a swimmer for Surinam at Seoul in 1988....

Mami Wata will get you!
In Ghana they don't fish on Tuesday because of Mami Wata. They believe she will seduce you into giving up your boat or seduce you into the water. They also won't even let you go swimming in the sea on Tuesday.

Lot of kids I grew up with from the Carib couldn't swim and usually where afraid of dogs which was entertaining sometimes.

I didn't know Dale used to prowl the Carib in his mankini.

Cover yourself in Goose fat before you get in the water.
I do this whenever I get on a boat, just in case.

I like to cover myself in goose fat for other reasons, I'd prefer not to confuse these two activities.
