  • Trying to put together an AV system on the v cheap.

I have a pair of Yamaha MSP5 active monitors, to which I wish to connect the audio outputs of my DVD player, Freeview box, ipod.

Am I right in thinking a preamp is the way to go?

  • yeah, something like that. one of those AV control center things..dunno if they call them 'preamps' anymore, do they?

  • it depends on whether you want to do surround sound, if you don't any amp will do, most av amps have lots of inputs so you can shove most things through it, and then the electronic gubbins to move the sound around 5/6 speakers. I've got a yamaha one, which is pretty good so the reviews say, but its most probably been superceded since its about 3yrs old. If you want to get one cheap richer sounds are always a good bet.

But kowalski has active monitors which have integrated amplifiers. Thatmeans he doesn't need an amp, just the preamp for source switching and attenuation, I think?

if he's only got the two speakers and they are powered then yeah a pre amp will do, though the only pre amps I've seen tend to run to the pricey side.

  • i use one of these :

about 80 quid. you can switch inputs etc etc.

edit : only 2 inputs though... forgot you needed a load more.

just buy a small compact mixer!

  • yeah, that's what i'll do. behringer do nice small ones for really cheap and they work very decently. can be bought for less than 60 the smallest one less than 40.

  • behringer gear sucks ass

you don't need anything with mic preamps,

there's some small line mixers around for live work which should suit.

    that's what you want.

    small stereo line mixer.

  • Cheers all!

  • spawned from retro di corsas quad 405 i felt this was needed to express love for all things hifi.

deals on the bay, dream decks and amps, audio porn

  • wow. here we go. another geek willy-waver.

Mr. Smith will be along in a moment with his Naim, his vinyl and his Rega turntable.

  • I waved my willy at an interconnect which cost £80. I think I was foolish.

  • Undoing my zip...Here we go...Meridian...swing-left...B&W Nautilus...Swing-right

  • I've got one of these; Technics semi-pro 70's rackmount madness 10 band EQ with parametric EQ on each band.

  • mmm that garrard would go nicely with my replinthed Lenco L75..... :) just needs a slatedeck.

  • I had a Garrard deck for many years - not as nice as that though! Then I had one of these - great deck:

  • at home I have a set of these:

they are Sony APM-22es, which are fairly odd but sound wicked. especially considering i bought them in a charity shop for AUD$80.

If you still have it you NEED to get it out of that cabinet and onto a solid high mass plinth - preferably whilst replacing the arm.

It is a true Swiss classic and a real giant killer of a TT

  • ^ I'm ashamed to say that I dumped it a couple of years ago....... sigh

  • lenco make good decks i always preferred thorens in the same price bracket and reliability.

vello has a lenco , or he did.

  • Got a lovely Rega Planar III. Had a Linn K9 but the stylus mount perished. Any one know if replacements are available or a good current alternative?

  • wow. here we go. another geek willy-waver.

Mr. Smith will be along in a moment with his Naim, his vinyl and his Rega turntable.

so that's a naim nait?? and a rega planner?? 3??

used to have a naim, very nice amps, then replaced that with a mission cyrus 2, and also had a linn sondec with mission speakers.

    bloody cd's and p3's.

always wanted to get a new set-up.

but a mac/ipod etc and some good comp speakers, seem to take up a lot less room and be more portable.

    shame.

    p.s. nice gerrard.

  • those Rega Planar decks - you had to change the elastic band from 33 to 45 right?!
