Frame too short - remedies?

  • Got measured for a frame to be built. Unfortunately after giving a good go for a couple of months, I hate to say it's a few inches too short. They measured my arm span and my inside leg but having, as I do, a long upper body, I think this may have been to spanner in the works as this wasn't accounted for.
If I ride holding the ends of the bullhorns it's not so bad but I still find myself pushing off the back of the seat sometimes. The upright position is def too short. As I say, it's prob only a few inches, but still, it's not right.

So, is there a way I can remedy this? Maybe a longer A head or an extreme lay back seat post maybe, or both. My A head is currently 145mm (centre of stem to front of A head).

    Cheers for any advice.

  • Who made it?

  • Have a few discs removed and vertebrae fused together.

  • usual: longer stem, raise your seatpost

  • You can compensate by having a longer stem, but that would make the bike handle slightly different (steering feel less active).

To be honest, I'd be miffed about it since having a custom fitted frame mean you'll have a bike that fit you perfectly without needing to have different component to compensate your sizing.

why don't you talk to the framebuilder again? it's their fault for not measuring you properly.

  • Who made it?

Rather not say as I fear it will garner them some un-needed criticism. What I'm looking for are possible remedies mainly.

  • Who fitted and built it?

That sounds like a shit job

would ask them to build one that fits

  • Take it back...

I agree. My stem has been chopped quite short. The only adjustment I can get is to remove the spacer and have it shorter. Kinda miffed that it isn't quite right. I might talk to the framebuilder again.

  • gutted.

Have you tried a layback seatpost?

  • i think you need to go back to the people who measured you and buiklt the frame as they've done a crap job by the sounds of things.

145mm is already a long stem, i woulnt go any longer, a layback seatpost like a thomson will give you an inch or two extra reach but if its massively too small the frame needs to be sorted and if you were fitted and custom built you should not be suffering this problem unless you have grown since buying it...

  • gutted.

Have you tried a layback seatpost?

Yep, feel bit gutted but it's not the end of the world. I'm sure the guys will help me out of I talk to them.
I've seen some posts that are very laid back and am thinking of trying one of those. Just need to dig one out on the net.

Ok cool. Might look into the Thompson. Also, I have been sleeping in a pile of horse shit out in the rain since i brought the bike. I may have grown. I'll confirm this before I proceed.

  • a) Got measured for a frame to be built

    b) It's a few **inches **too short

One of these statements can not be true.

  • Stems are normally measured centre to centre, so you've probably got a 130 mm stem. You can get some models in 140 mm which may help.

But really, if the top tube is so short that you need to use a 140 mm stem then the frame is too short. I'd talk to the builder about your options.

  • I'd speak to them and see if they can sort you out. If they measured you up and it's wrong it's pretty much their problem (maybe you should have got back to them sooner, but I guess that horse has bolted). Maybe offer to pay a bit more to "help them help you" sort of thing? 140mm stem is looooooooooooooooong

Ok. Sounds like I'm gonna have to go back in and discuss it. The only option as far as I can imagine would be to build me a new frame tho' no?

  • who did the fitting?

you? the builder? or someone who does cyclefitting?

part of the point of a custom build is to then be able to use optimum standard stems and seat posts

if it needs a 140mm stem its fucked

if you start dicking around witha layback seatpost you will fuck up one of the critical aspects of fit, namely position of seat with respect to bottom bracket

was this really a custom frame or an otp that they have then used stupid parts to make "fit"

if they did such a shit job please name and shame to save others from such hassles

  • so its a shop 14 build

that was not hard to work out

  • a day ago you loved it, so why the change of heart?

hang on, by short you mean it's lower? not short as in the stem length?

  • Short wheelbase for wheelies yo.

Shop measured me, frame-builder built it.

That's interesting to know, cheers. Thought this may be the case.

It was a custom frame. If it wasn't and I find out that it wasn't, or if they fail with an adequate resolution, then I can guarantee I'll name them, until then I'm mainly seeking suggestions, opinions from y'all.
    ......

Guess I'm just deluding myself a bit, trying to ignore the nagging doubt about the fit, don't really wanna go through the hassle of getting it sorted.

  • take it back
