oh no, what'll you do?
-
• #3
That makes me 2/0 in Colnago Supers, think I might consider another marque!
-
• #4
wow!
would you sell the suntour headset?
-
• #5
I don't have a suntour headset?
-
• #6
Hmm, I could build it without the spacer, but then it wouldn't look right. Fuck this is annoying.
-
• #7
just had the same problem with a new build, everything super record, steerer too short so it's got a tange super record copy on it, it as smaller ball bearings so it fits.
maybe you could fit smaller ball bearings to the super record one, if you work out how to fit it let me as i'm a tart too and need to get mine on there. -
• #8
Why not just lose the spacer? how wrong can it look?
-
• #9
just wrong.if you've got everything right one little thing throws it off.
the spacer is real pretty too, engraved etc -
• #10
Yeah the spacer isn't a normal spacer it's what makes a SR headset look like a SR headset really. I don't know about the smaller bearings as the cups wouldnt be designed for them etc. Just wish I found this out a month ago before I got all the bits ready!
-
• #11
i could'nt get smaller bearings to fit but i'm not great at tech stuff.i'm sure someone will know.
you could always file a couple of mm off the headtube, it's only a colnago after all.;)
-
• #12
The guy I bought it off told me SR headsets are shit anyway and any seasoned cyclist should know this. Suggested I ream out the top and bottom cups. Argghhh!
-
• #13
they probably are shit compared to modern headsets but he's missing the point.if your fitting the full groupset you need the headset on there too.
maybe try to ream a cheap headset and see if it will work before attacking the SR
-
• #14
Remove spacer or face headtube slightly?
-
• #15
Yeah, screw on a couple of top races, then file the steerer down. You can use the racers to help reshape the threads.
-
• #16
Sam the steerer is too short so don't think filing it would help - if I understand what your saying correctly. Going to leave it for now and see what I think when I'm less pissed off!
I don't want to touch the frame so making the headtube smaller isn't an option - to me that would just ruin a perfectly good frame. I reckon it will annoy me either having the wrong headset on, or an incomplete SR one. Probably destined for the bay I reckon.

• #17
I don't have a suntour headset?
ahahah, sorry. I meant stronglight obviously
-
• #18
Sorry not separte to the frame and forks - its the only headset I have that fits!
-
• #19
How far of is it?
Shaving the bottom of the steerer might work.
-
• #20
It is out by about the width of the spacer which is 4/5mm thick, to fit perfectly it'd need 6mm extra
-
• #21
Get a new steerer tube brazed onto the forks?
-
• #22
Any idea how much that would cost? Plus its likely to fook the paint too isn't it? I'm thinking less faff to sell and re-buy as I'm not attatched to this frame in particular I just want a nice Col. super in my size
-
• #23
It would mean the forks would have to be re finished, yes. In fact it'd probably work out cheaper just to source some new forks.
-
• #24
Yeah I reckon so, but then by extension probably cheaper to ebay this one and buy another. Thanks for all the possible fixes / tips but I think it's either stop being gay and get over the headset being slightly wrong or get rid.

Surely you can search out some Super forks w/longer steerer and when you do and have found they fit you can sell your current ones?
Went to build up my Colnago super tonight, took off the Stronglight headset to fit my NOS Super Record one only to find the steerer is too short for the headset to fit correctly - with the fat spacer of the super rec. headset the top nut can't engage. Which is a twat.
The frame is beautiful and if the headset fitted would be a keeper. But I am a tart and can't bring myself to use all my NOS Super Record bits EXCEPT the headset.
There is nothing wrong with the frame or the stronglight headset I will be putting back on, it just doesn't suit my planned build.
Its a 57 ST. Can do more pics measurements if someone is interested. It has been freshly professionally refinished, may be a few tiny marks.
Looking for £400 or swap for 57ST Colnago super in good nick with slightly longer steerer. Selling frame fork headset only, the other bits in the pic are not for sale.
