FSA Carbon Laminate bars (cutting down)

  • Chain reaction have got a bit of a bargain on, I managed to get some OS carbon wrapped Aluminium bars (£14.99!), I want to cut them down for Polo, Has anyone cut these style of dual material bars? Am i best to use a jnr hacksaw, hacksaw or a pipecutter (which seems to work on aluminium normally

  • Use a hacksaw, not a pipe cutter.
Toothless brade, if possible. Or very fine teeeth.
    Wear a breathing mask.
Don't touch loose fibres / burrs.
Damn sharp, they hurt and are unhealthy.
    Pretty easy to do though.

  • using carbon bars for polo = FAIL

  • using carbon wrapped 6061 T6.. as I said above = win

The carbon is just to look pretty.. innit.

Ok i'll use a fine tooth saw mask and gloves.. I know carbon fibre is nasty stuff..

  • im assuming those carbide saws wont work on the alu? plus there fooking expensive

  • Saw and patience, wrap bar in masking tape to help protect it before you start cutting, Finish ends carefully with fine sandpaper/file.

  • hopefully the tape will stop there being quite as much dust. I have got gloves and a mask - thought about using an airsaw but I have a feeling that might go a bit wrong. we have titanium nitride coated blades that are very slick im hoping that will go through a treat.

    I cut through,

Using a steel rule I measured the whole bar and found the tolerances are not very tight so I made a few extra measurement from the centre of the bars, I masked off the section to be cut, mounted in a vice (on the waste section) and used a pipe cutter to score a guideline around the masking tape but not in to the carbon layer. Next I used a large hacksaw with a fine blade in slow smooth strokes, it didnt take long to get through. it makes alot of black dust and aluminium swarf so I wore a mask and gloves.
I finished the ends of the bars with a small steel file then with a fine grade sandpaper. and the finish is pretty good

  • Quick question,

for my next project im looking to get some ultralight bullhorn bars. I happen to have an FSA carbon Road bars that are already super light.

I was wondering if I could chop them to make even lighter Bulls. Or would cutting the carbon compromise the integrity of the bars? Would it be safe to do as its carbon?

Thanks for your help in advance

  • Given your "big bones" do you really need to lose weight from the bars?

  • Technically, not really, but as I am looking to build something interesting, it doesnt matter about *my *weight. This is about fun of the project.

    So in that light, yes.

  • Hmmmm.... Not sure.

I was told by some guy in cycle surgery once that you shouldn't cut woven carbon bars. So only carbon bars like the Easton's.

I don't know if this is true. But one useful tip was using a fresh hack saw blade and +1 to using masking tape.

How are you going to be runnin them? Just cut with road leavers or flipped?

  • Flip them and put brake ends in them I think.

I thought that sawing crabon would probably be a bad idea.
