I've just got back from Iceland, and I have to say I fell in love with it a little bit. I'm thinking of a tour there next summer.
Take a look at my pics; http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/home
Look at the 3/7 in particular - that's what the interior looks like. I fancy doing the island top-right to bottom-left through that stuff. Only problem is wind: there's a lot of it. Enough to make you slow down, get off, lay down, huddle the bike so it doesn't blow away and cry gently.
Anyone here been there on a bike?
Just seen this Thread (uts for iceland).
Been in Iceland with my bike from 28 July to 28 August 09.
First ever bike trip, very hard and challenging but scenery was worth it all, loved every moment of it...
Your picasa link doesn´t work...

We did a large chunk of it; 1,400km driving in a handful of days. Spent a lot of time in that super-jeep...
Would love to go back on a bike though.

We are going to Iceland in deepest, darkest December.
Since there will be no daylight(ish) I plan to get drunk a lot.
Other than doing that and the day trips out to the main sights would you suggest anything in particular to check out in or within a day from Reykjavik?
Also, does anyone have the movie 101 Reykjavik I could borrow?

Interior of Iceland will be closed, roads frozen and covered in ice and snow.
Go to the irish bar and tell kieran lynx loves ya. Seafood near he dock was amazing and steal a towel from the power station outfall. A saturday night is awesome.

If the weather and daylight allows, then I would recommend a trip on a small aircraft. You can see the now famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Gullfoss, Þingvellir, Vestmannaeyjar and maybe the highlands on a trip taking about two or three hours. If you prefer a car ride then I would suggest http://www.re.is/. The blue lagoon is also very popular.
Once you got this covered, then you can then spend the rest of your time drunk in the dark. I would recommend you go downtown on a Friday or Saturday evening and prepare to stay until early morning.
Otherwise, I'm also planning a trip around Iceland on my bike next summer in June. -

I spent all my time in a superjeep in the interior and driving around the coast. Didn't hang around in the city much. Would love to go back and do that in winter though. Fancy a bike tour there as well, maybe on my MTB through the interior.

gjonsson: Have you done this? Who did you fly with and how much is it likely to cost?
Tiswas: Work hard, play hard, credit card :)

We went last May..
Have a posh dinner in the Perlan revolving restaurant - awesome
would defo recommend some volcano action, and northern lights tour by plane at that time of year
There really isn't that much in the capital, it's just where most people live.
There is no public transport but there should be some tours like the Golden Circle tour bookable from any hotel - can be seasonal though and depends on weather.
Cafe Prikid has very good $5 shakes and cake, we hung out a lot there
Get horribly drunk then spend a morning/afternoon at the Blue Lagoon recovering.
It will be fucking cold.
Where are you staying? -

Food. Weird. I ate;
Rotting shark meat.
Puffins.
Boiled eggs cooked in a geyser. -

Centre Hotel Thingholt
http://www.centerhotels.com/our-hotels/hotel-thingholt/We have got the Fri/Sat pub crawl thing in mind and will sort day trips to see blue lagoon and geyser, northern lights. I wanted to see the national park glaciers but it would take a day to get there and accommodation is thin on the ground so we decided to stick near the capital.
I've been looking into the flights but they're >£200 a piece which is more than it cost to get there in the first place so might give those a miss.
I'm gonna to have to take more than a hoody aren't I? Shit.

I like hearing they have no McDonalds in Iceland. This is good.

Starbucks and a Big Mac for Hippy.
Only joking, it'll be several double whoppers with cheese & bacon and a cafe nero when you buy me the 2012 feast.
Only joking, it'll be the Dorchester.

You'll be buying and if you want to take me to the Dorchester googles it then I'm happy with that.

Puffin is really nice, a bit like duck.
The seafood is excellent
I'd stay away from the shark/whale though.
We found that there wasn't a big range of cuisine/decent restaurants tbh. However the Perlan was fucking excellent. -
• #24
Ok, Perlan is on the cards then. Anything else?

Puffin is lovely, but it feels a bit wrong to eat the poor little bastards. Also, there's not a lot of meat on them. You really have to hack away.
Eggs in the geyser is just a gimmick. We also had bread which had been buried as dough and cooked in the hot soil overnight. Great fun.
Shark, well, try it for the novelty. You know when you go into a horrible pub's toilets and it reeks of ammonia and you worry about your shoelaces and trousers touching the floor because it's so disgusting? It's like eating that. But chewier. But they at least wash it down with a shot. Don't let the local tough guys tell you they like it. Nobody bloody likes it. I was quite drunk and ate a fair bit in a bravado stylee. Horrible.
