The safest way to pack and post wheels

Posted on
  • Hi...done the search bit but could not find anything.....I have just sold a set of wheels and have not got a big enough box...can anyone suggest the best/safe way to parcel up a set of wheels.....that will go via parcelforce or standard Royal Mail parcel post....cheers.....Leon

  • Hey Leon.

If you can keep a pair of tyres on them, do. If not, just put them side by side, wrap them both in a few layers of foam, parcel tape that up, then wrap it in parcel paper and tape that up too. Just make sure you can't feel any metal when it's all done. You can't send it by Royal Mail, btw, i've tried. It has to go via Parcelforce, which will cost the minimum, £10.99.

  • it can go by royal mail, i have sent a wheel and a rim by royal mail on separate occaisions. the max size is 1.5m long and a total sum of sides of not more than 3m.

  • I would avoid parcel farce and go with Royal mail. It's also worth going recorded or at the very least proof of postage.

  • I thought Parcelforce and Royal Mail were the same company effectively?...

  • I think in theory yes but the service most people receive from parcel farce is awful, royal mail aren't too bad.

  • Bubble wrap helps to stop damage in transit.

  • Lots of bubble wrap and newspaper is the plan....but does anybody have any experience of how much it is to post wheels? Also who is the best to go with - having searched on here and found a thread Royal Mail appears to be cheaper than parcel force

    Cheers

  • Royal Mail, costs 12.99 for 48hr. Used them twice. Most difficult bit with posting wheels is getting a big enough box. Local bike shop is best bet for one.

  • I bought a wheelset that arrived in a full bike box; I thought that was pretty excessive on the packaging front.

  • Thanks guy, no-mates was that 12.99 standard parcel?

  • use a box, all sorts of shit can happen if you just wrap em

  • use a box, all sorts of shit can happen if you just wrap em

Yer sorry, didn't make that clear. Plan is to wrap and then put in the box

I'm hoping standard parcel will cover it - a bit of googling and searching brought me to this site (linking incase anybody does a search for posting wheels in the future) http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content1?mediaId=51000711&catId=400031

However, it might be worth going first class, as the less time they are going through the system, the less chance there is of damage

  • Standard parcel was 9.50 I think and there was no tracking. I had to cut a bike box down to size to post some wheels this week, lbs had no boxes,
