  • Folks,

I have a pair of large flange 36 hole track hubs front and rear that I am looking to build up but thanks to the joys of the modern metric world we live in I am having a struggle to find any reasonable/good quality new/second hand 27" rims. Only cheap town bike tat available new in the UK, and Ebay hasn't had much for a while. The US still makes reasonable rims new but shipping is a killer. . .

Anybody got any? I either need 2 x 36hole rims or would consider full wheelsets if thats all there is..

After some Wolber, Mavic quality rims ideally but lets see what ya got!

Before it's suggested - have I considered just using 700c's and a long drop brake? yes and it looks a bit pants, so if I can do it properly i'd like to. . .

    Cheers, Steve

  • leave it a couple of weeks and you could have my 27" wheels. i'm changing over to 700c, and once i've found and fitted a new wheelset for myself i'd be planning on getting rid of my current ones anyway. i think they're 36s, but i'd have to check. i'd also have to check the make of the hubs and rims, as i can't remember off the top of my head.

The only problem is that they're a bit old and in need of some TLC: both need truing, rear wheel is in need of two new spokes and both hubs need a damn good clean and re-grease. but if you don't find any elsewhere, once i've got a new wheelset for myself then you can have mine for a tenner.

  • i still have that weird 40(?) hole 27" wolber rim (attached to a maillard hub) kicking aboot the place. this isn't the first time i've tied to give it away. it's too nice to bin but probably a bit too much like hassle to make work with the weird hole count etc... hence why i never used it. welcome to collect for owt.

  • @ ^link, does anybody know what Alesa rims are like? after a bit of searching it seems like they were made by or connected to Weinmann somehow? If they're any good/reasonable it doesn't seem like a bad option although expensive compared with the 700c alternative. . .

My buy it new options seem to be something like this or buying some rims such as the Sun M13 or CR18 from the states but shipping makes that a bit costly.

Dooks, a very nice offer, if i can't get something to work with the hubs I have i'll give you a shout and take it off your hands. . .

Ftony, also a nice offer, if you get chance could you let me know make and confirm hole count? spokes, hubs being a bit knackered doesn't matter as I am only in need of rims, as long as they themselves are in good nick.

    Cheers

  • ^ I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing with some tubs I've got.

Saw that harriscylery / narrow Sun rims. Really tempted as all the 27"s seem to be 27 1 1/4 which looks so wide to me.

Also (sorry to hi-jack) but can you use 1 1/8 tyres on 1 1/4 rims? - like the way there's leway on 700s?

  • ragingroids - if you do get those sun rims, I'll order some with you if it will reduce the P&P

    EDIT: buying 4 only = $7.50 saving :(

  • ^ yeah I wondered about those. Its just I'd like some 1 1/8's... but I don't know if this is just stupid.

Do you know if 1 1/8 tyres will go on 1 1/4 rims?

  • Have you had a look at the wares of our generous sponsor?

    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category-Rims--27-(630)-170.htm

  • Yeah seen the sjs - in 36H its just the rigida and the Jetset (a moderate quality rim says SJS).

Really want a nice set if I'm going to the trouble of having the campag hubs I've got rebuilt...

... from the OP sounds like ragingroids is also after quality... hummm...

... aslo sorry I'm taking over this thread, but as I was going to post one like it anyway in a few months...

Um...my question was kind of meant for ragingroids. ;-)

  • if anyone's interested I've got a Super Champion 36h 27" rim

    it's pretty shiny

No idea but I'd like to know, maybe post in mechanics & fixin?

Plastic pedals, that sounds like a wolber super champion? could be bob on, how much you looking for?

Cheers for the heads up Soweto888, I've seen the SJS rims but they do seem a bit of a budget option, its not as if i'm after anything really flash, but most of the new 27's available in the UK are single wall, non-eyleted and probs pretty pants.

The only way I can see to get a good quality rim is to get lucky second hand, or to buy some from the likes of harris cyclery.

Looks like I may have found one, now if only another 36h wolber is lurking in someones attic. . .

  • Matching rims might require patience. If you can be patient, one will turn up. I think I saw a Wolber SC on eBay only the other day, 36h.

Also try giving Madgett's in Diss a call. They're nice people and might be able to help you, at least with a Rigida or perhaps Mavic Module E if not Wolber...

Saw some Modules go on the Bay for a fair bit of cash the other day.

If I were you I'd just get a Jalco. They're basic but fine. Nowt wrong with 'em, though have rounder top than a Wolber. You can strip the Ano off to make them look fairly similar.

To hugo07: yeah your 1 & 1/8 tyres will be fine on 1 & 1/4" rims, make sure you keep the pressure high all the time though.

@dooks hah wondered whether you still haz that! I might take it back off you if I buy a tandem (<<joke, I can't face the idea of arguing with the mrs on a bike).

  • Just thought I'd update with a find...

    Velocity make 27"!

They have 3 kinds, all do 36H.

I know Velocity are know more for "bullit-proof-idity" rather than refinement, but still, a good find.

Only prob is I guess its only from the US - but 14 or BLB might be persuaded that there's a market in them!?

@ Skully - thanks for all that info.

  • Ragingroids, I'm looking for a tenner for the rim

    it's like this one

I've also got a front Shimano hub and the spokes to go with it if you want, for another fiver

    I'm in SW6

  • Most of the new 27's available in the UK are single wall, non-eyleted and probs pretty pants.

Now you come to mention it, I was looking for new 27s earlier this month - for a fixed conversion - and it was the lack of eyelets that put me off the Rigida rims. I ended up taking apart the original wheels that came with the bike, and reusing the rims. Maybe you could keep an eye out for a complete wheelset on eBay and buy it just for the rims?

Plastic Pedals, spot on - PM on it's way sir.

Any more for any more? . . .

  • One shiny 36h 27inch rim acquired, cheers Alex (PlasticPedals)

Still on the lookout for one more 36hole 27inch clincher rim, super champion/wolber a bonus to make a matching set.

Failing that i will have to try my luck with ebay i think (cheers for the shout hugo)

  • Got one Mavic Mod 3 in 36h? I'll need to double check as most I have are 32/40 in 700c ,
but 99% sure it's 36h and 27" -used but only just.
    £10 collected from Harrow(UB6) or Mill Hill(NW7)

  • my 27" wheelset will be available to buy in the next week or so if you've not had better luck elsewhere.

  • Hey mig, is it alloy with the normal crome esque finish? and double walled/eyleted such as:

    http://velobase.com/ViewSingleComponent.aspx?ID=af623581-edc7-4a96-9009-33837e99cb5a&Enum=107

If so it looks like a good match for my super champion. Could you check it is def 27" and 36h? there is a rim i've got my eye on ending on ebay late this evening but would rather buy from you if poss, so if you get chance to check before tonight I would be gratefull.

If it is then £10 collected is good by me. Thanks, Steve
